For everyone heading to South Bend this weekend that we’ve talked to…there’s a chance we may not be at Pole 13 the whole time. Follow our Twitter updates to see where we are at. Or shoot us an email before Saturday.

Having had a chance to see Nevada play the last couple of years, I can tell you that the Wolfpack will not be a pushover. In addition to having the best returning QB in the WAC in Colin Kaepernick, and a fine returning running back in Vai Taua, but they also get back Luke Lippencott who missed almost all of last season with an injury. They have a veteran core to the offensive line, but will need to fill a couple of holes.

My feeling is that ND needs to slow the Pistol (I don’t know that anyone can expect to stop it cold) and light it up through the air. Clausen (obviously) needs to avoid interceptions – meaning (among other things) the offensive line needs to show improvement from last season. Finally, the Irish will have a depth advantage (although Nevada’s running game is very deep.)

It might be close for a while (the Wolfpack will be the better of the first two teams Notre Dame faces), but I expect the Irish can take it away in the 4th quarter.

    Good season opener.

Eric…I think we got a glimpse of the new “Game Day Experience” during the spring game. That was the “kids” area that I parked next to…although I believe it will be in a different location for the regular season.

Jonas Gray…”JG!!!”….I agree, watch out for him this year!!!

Sprout…I need to go against you on your pick that if Charlie leaves, Urban Meyer will leave Florida to take his place. Let me point something out…there’s a certain somebody whose dad was a ND coordinator back in the 70’s. He’s also said that he would love to coach at ND, and he’s got experience as a former Super Bowl winning NFL head coach. And you know something…he got fired last year and he didn’t get picked up by any of the NFL teams. Instead he’s doing Monday Night Football. That’s right, a young coach who has a Super Bowl ring and no one in the college or NFL ranks want him? That seems weird. Do you think John Gruden sees the talent at ND and he feels that this might be Weis’ last chance? I’m thinking Gruden took the MNF job to wait and see what happens to ND this year and if Weis fails, he’s going to swoop in and take over.

Have fun at the Nevada game. We’ll try and swing by for the UW game. Mannix and I are pumped to do some serious tailgating with the Pole 13 crew for the USC game as well!!

Clutch on September 2nd, 2009 at 8:01 am

Interesting thought Clutch, but there is one discrepancy I must clarify. I’m not saying “if Charlie leaves, Urban Meyer will leave Florida to take his place” I’m saying if and when Urban Meyer decides to leave Florida…the ND job is his, whether or not Charlie was planning on staying or leaving.

Of course, I said this 10 beers deep, but I know my buddy is holding me to it so I can sound like a total jackass when it doesn’t come to fruition, but we shall see.

Sprout on September 2nd, 2009 at 8:41 am

First off, I am liking the high class updated site – classy and great kickoff for the new season. Haven’t been on since basketball season.

I’m heading up to the Nevada game and am a little nervous about the pistol. It’s the kind of gimmick that we are notoriously burned by. Double-reverse flea flickers never even work in a video game, but for some reason ND falls for it.

Finally, in the case that we actually thump Nevada like we should, Charlie had better keep the hammer down and keep scoring and not put the e-brake on ala the Navy game last year. His job is on the line, now is not the time to be “nice”. Run the freaking score up

Frommy on September 2nd, 2009 at 9:52 am

    Also, I’m calling 10-2

Frommy on September 2nd, 2009 at 9:57 am

Thanks Frommy. Glad to have you back.

I agree with you on Weis keeping his foot on the pedal. This needs to be the case for every single game. No excuses. If we can score, do it. It’s not running up the score when your job is on the line.

Sprout on September 2nd, 2009 at 9:57 am

Been a long offseason, guys. Good to see you again! GO IRISH!

trey on September 2nd, 2009 at 10:03 am

@Frommy, agree completely…I think Charlie knows to keep his foot down this season. After Syracuse he has no choice but to run up the score.

I’m not too worried about the pistol offense, previous years I would be but for some reason I’m worry free right now. My concern is a slow start on offense just because it’s game 1, but that’s what my case of busch light will be for. I expect to be up by 17 by the time I run out of BL’s.

Eric on September 2nd, 2009 at 10:12 am

I think you guys are crazy with the “pushover” status of the Wolfpack, but I hope you’re right. There will be a bunch of us going to the University of Scratchy Crotch game, and we hope to hit up pole 13. I watched every show last year, and laughed heartily. Keep up the drikning/er good work, and I’m looking for a place to buy Magic Hat in Iowa. WE ARE N D!

Jakerbluegold on September 2nd, 2009 at 10:54 am

@jakerbluegold, you can try Magic Hat’s Sip Code service, http://magichat.net/sipcode to see if they have any in your area. Not sure if they are in Iowa yet.

Sprout on September 2nd, 2009 at 11:15 am

what is the video with sergio and swarbrick? link???

jclausen on September 2nd, 2009 at 11:36 am

    Here you go jclausen, http://www.insidenotredamefootball.com/index2.php

It’s the second video from the list on the right. Now get back to practice. It’s game week.

Sprout on September 2nd, 2009 at 11:51 am

I love the new recruit…really I love him!!

laurie on September 2nd, 2009 at 2:18 pm

Sprout, you think we’re going to lose BACK-TO-BACK home games??? I think you used the wrong term by saying you’re “realistic” in picking USC to beat us. Two years ago, yes, but this year, we are completely loaded, we out-weigh and out-talent them on our O-Line…they’re starting a true freshman QB…they play us sandwiched between the toughest two conference road games on their sched. I think “pragmatic” might have been a better choice of words.

Also, your score predictions are kinda silly. UConn is stout, there’s no way we blow them out and not BC.

trey on September 2nd, 2009 at 3:15 pm

I dont want Meyer to ever come to ND. He would never beable to recruit the type of “student” athletes that he has at Florida. He has had 24 arrested since at Florida and that is not ND style. He can rot in Florida with his crap attitude and his complete group of dumbass players. The whole Florida team can’t even spell their name. His style of play is not for smart players, just jailbirds!!!

    Great Show

Quin on September 2nd, 2009 at 3:38 pm

Hey Eric, what does your shirt say?

Irish Joe on September 2nd, 2009 at 4:39 pm

I hear ya, Trey. I agree, some of my predictions are way off. But that’ll what happen when you make predictions after a case of beer and then your buddy holds you to them. Luckily, I didn’t bet him any money. Ha.

But with the USC and BC situation…trust me, I hope I am wrong. But I don’t know. Sure, it’s easy to say this is the year that we should beat USC. But I don’t agree with all your assessments. I don’t think being sandwiched between Cal and Oregon State is too much of a concern for them. They’ve got a bye in between Cal and us, and the Oregon State game is a home game. That game, if any, they should be worried about because it’s sandwiched between us and #16 Oregon…but I also don’t think Pete is gonna let his team look ahead to any team other than the one they play that weekend. I’m gonna give him the benefit of the doubt too on started a freshman quarterback. To do that, he has to believe that he’s got a team around him he can win with. The tOSU game will be a good test for the team’s confidence. Plus, let’s not forget that we’ve been outscored 120-27 the last three times we’ve played. It’s gonna be an uphill battle.

Also, we’re 0-6 against BC our past 6 meetings and we haven’t beat MSU at home since 1993. I gotta believe one of those streaks will continue. And I really, really want the MSU streak to be the one that ends.

Sprout on September 2nd, 2009 at 7:23 pm

    A few observations:

    1) Really glad you guys are back…the show is great.

    2) Glad to see you are polling your fan base. Please remember to use protection.

    3) That picture of Zorich will haunt my dreams forever.

    4) With the improved site, I think some wardrobe changes are in order (read: what’s up with that jacket Eric…that badboy must be stanky).

    5) Sprout, I think your predictions are on the money and I mostly agree except for BC. I can’t bear the thought of another loss to the Backup College. I’m with Eric at 11-1.

    6) I hope there’s no let downs this year like falling apart to UCONN or some other crap ass team a la our come from ahead loss to Syracuse ‘08. I still can’t believe that happened.

    7) We will completely disarm the “pistol”. Hey it’s not like they have a real mac 9 or something. They’re from the WAC…….it’s really more of a pea shooter anyway.

    8) Like it or not Urban comes to South Bend in 3-5 years. In any case, Charlie does need to show some Jersey attitude this year and step on an opponent’s throat when they are down. His motto should be WWTSD (What would Tony Soprano do?)

    9) This is the best time of the year, isn’t it?

    10) You guys should poll that cupcake girl.

    Warmest personal regards,
    JerseyShoreNDFan

JerseyShoreNDFan on September 2nd, 2009 at 7:50 pm

I can’t argue with Lou’s reasoning. This is Charlie’s long awaited coming out party. 12-0 and playing for the national championship. Just like you Sprout, I may be eating my words some time during the season. Only time will tell.

KyNDFan on September 2nd, 2009 at 8:04 pm

Sweet merciful crap I can’t wait for the MSU preview.

Uncle Craig on September 3rd, 2009 at 9:27 am

Sprout, how can you be picking against ND vs USC and BC?? I tell you right now that if this is gonna be a season of ressurection then we must at least beat BC, and I think USC is ripe for the picking!!

Paddy on September 3rd, 2009 at 9:36 am

I’m a Domer in St. Louis and have been a big Mizzou fan, too. I watched them absolutely destroy Nevada by dropping 69 points on them last year and if memory serves, Nevada only scored 17? In any event, Mizzou had a mediocre defense AT BEST sometimes last year. I’m not saying Notre Dame will drop 60+ on the Wolfpack, but seriously… the pistol shouldn’t be a challenge for them to defend and they will light it up through the air. This will not be a repeat of San Diego State last year, but competitive for a little while. 42-17 Irish

Mike on September 3rd, 2009 at 10:34 am

I have no fear of BC…unless we beat USC the week before. I was a freshman in 1993, and I’ve seen it before.

I won’t be at the Nevada game, but I will be in Ann Arbor next weekend. Look for the one jackass wearing green somewhere on the forty yard line about thirty rows up. I’ve never seen Michigan lose at home, and I’ve been to quite a few games there (was a grad student for three years). I’ve witnessed both thirty-plus point shutouts the last few years. Hell, maybe I should stay home so we can win?

The site looks great, guys. Glad to see you decided to stick with it. Looking forward to a great year!

Dager on September 4th, 2009 at 8:02 am

If ND keeps winning like that, I’m going to have a serious drinking problem by the end of the season.

Mannix made a game recap and posted it on Youtube….check it out.

It has been a while since we have seen an act like Michael Floyd, see Rocket / Tim Brown. Wasted my time at the Western Mich. v Michigan game. Impressed by Mich. QB’s running but hard to tell with Western playing so god awful. Certainly will need Floyd and Tate to have big games against Michigan’s secondary. Can’t wait for this Saturday.

    K-zoo Ron on September 7th, 2009 at 10:30 am

Well – shows you what I know. I expected Notre Dame’s passing game would be effective, but I didn’t expect the D to stop the pistol as well as they did. You just can’t argue with a shutout (although you have to get some luck with Nevada turning the ball over in the red zone.)

All in all, a great game for the Irish. Now they have to up the voltage because playing at the Big House will not be easier.
