Episode 51

2010 Season Preview

And we’re off. Just three days away from a new era of Notre Dame football taking the field. A new era has begun for the Loyal Sons as well. Sprout appears to have beaten Shaq Evans to Oregon, as he has taken his beard out West. But like anything else in life, the show must go on.

Let me be the first to say that we obviously filmed this before Kelly released the depth chart and before Shaq transferred. So take this as a preemptive “relax…we didn’t know”.

Sprout on August 31st, 2010 at 9:12 pm

I’m pretty sure Brian Kelly wouldn’t accept that as an excuse and neither will I. Anticipate transfers better.

    @Dascenzo on August 31st, 2010 at 9:42 pm

Sprout’s voice sounds funny. Also he looks like a character in a video game. I like it. You should work on a Donkey Kong theme. Or Pitfall.

    A$%# Lawyer on August 31st, 2010 at 10:02 pm

Don’t worry. We haven’t even begun to scrape the surface of iChat’s themed backgrounds.

Sprout on August 31st, 2010 at 10:20 pm

Will and I and a group of people are driving in for the Michigan game! See ya then!!

Catlin on September 1st, 2010 at 6:32 am

I love you guys! As a fellow subway alumnus, I dig the show.

However, I know you are constantly on the search for ways to improve your brand. First, lose the hats. So you’re going bald, man-up and deal with it. Hey, I’m so bald I just shave my head. Second, at least employ the basic human toiletry skills to trim your ratty-assed beards. Sloth is not a characteristic or Our Lady or the Dome. Hey Sprout – how sitting back a few feet from the camera dude. You look like a Sasquatch crouched over a kill. I swear I can see the lice crawling around in your RATTY ASSED BEARD. Don’t think I have forgotten about you Eric. Where did you get that green jacket? It looks like you stripped it off of a corpse you found lying in a gutter!

Can you guys find some way to soften the appearance of your show? Maybe hold a puppy or something.

Oh, I love you guys and I dig the show.

MannyBoy on September 1st, 2010 at 7:15 am

So good to have you guys back again. Love the show and wait for it every week. Hope to see you on campus this year again.

Bevo McGowan on September 1st, 2010 at 7:52 am

Oh boy. We got a live one.

Manny, take a look at this link: http://tinyurl.com/3×6cm38 It should give you all the basics you need to start your own blog. You seem to be chalk full of ideas that I’m afraid there isn’t enough room on this site for the the three of us. But I am sure there is a large audience out there for your show on basic human toiletry skills. So really, please start one.

    ****

Constructive criticism is great guys and sarcasm is my favorite thing, but it’s way too early in the season to be dealing with trolling. If not wearing hats is part of growing up then so is not flaming on the internet. Your call.

Sprout on September 1st, 2010 at 8:00 am

MannyBoy, you are watching a show about a college athletics, not the View. This is two guys talking sports and drinking beer, I have no idea why you would even bring up their grooming activities. They proudly wear their beards the same way most college football fans and players display theirs on Saturday. Sit back, enjoy the show, have some fun, and relax.

    Long live the beard!

Ghost of Josh Ott on September 1st, 2010 at 9:10 am

Ironically, I’m pretty sure a couple hosts from the View have sported a beard in their day.

Sprout on September 1st, 2010 at 9:14 am

Oh, and hiding behind a BC handle is also grounds to get you banned from the site. Nice try, JJ.

Sprout on September 1st, 2010 at 9:15 am

@MannyBoy: It’s going to be a long season, deep breaths, the beards aren’t going anywhere.

Eric on September 1st, 2010 at 9:42 am

Besides, saying beards aren’t “Our Lady or the Dome” just doesn’t make sense: http://archives.nd.edu/episodes/sorin/sorin-e.jpg

(ok, I’m done commenting for the morning)

Sprout on September 1st, 2010 at 9:48 am

Nice vid…but why the hate on the wmu game? we have a tough schedule we need a cup cake in the middle…any way i love the way u sign off fuck michigan!!

Mdizzy on September 1st, 2010 at 10:11 am

    Hey guys,

Nice kickoff to the season. I echo your sentiments and hope that this season is a nice preview of what’s in store for the Irish in seasons to come.

Also, rock the beard proudly. I had to shave mine off for work and it feels like I gave my first born child away.

I look foward to more videos and hopefully another partnership between our sites.

    *uck Michigan.

    - Jon

JonCM on September 1st, 2010 at 10:28 am

    Well,

I would like to think that our defense will be better coached, better conditioned, and fundamentally sound. It can’t get any worse, and you would like to think that this staff will get more out of this group then Corwin and Tenuta. Do I expect them to be dominant?? no, but I do expect a better performance.

    Take care guys,

    RB

Rob on September 1st, 2010 at 10:56 am

As these guys brother and attorney, I can tell ‘Boy that Sprout has a beard to hide a scar brought about by a tragic incident involving Mardi Gras, the Soulard, his 22d birthday, a “broken” toilet at a bar, and collapsing face first onto his sleeping beagle. Li’l E has one because he’s trying to show me up for being incapable of growing any facial hair.

    So back off.

    A$%# Lawyer on September 1st, 2010 at 10:56 am

I agree with you, Rob. The defense should definitely be better coached. Hopefully that turns into better performance…I’m just worried that the talent will still be too raw this season. Baby steps, I know.

Sprout on September 1st, 2010 at 11:19 am

Great show as always guys … As a die hard ND fan from Pittsburgh, all of the blogs and what not are the only way to keep up on everything ND football and you guys have been killing it for years. The Subway Alumni Show is a great change of pace from the news paper articles and press transcripts and things of that nature and you guys are a true voice of the fan. I think we should all raise a beer and salute the dedication and hard work of Sprout and Eric … while they continue to keep the hats on and grow their beards longer. Go Irish.

Dale on September 1st, 2010 at 11:29 am

I’m surprised you guys didn’t mention the new jerseys with the ND logo on the sleeve. The bookstore is now selling those, but I heard from a kid on the team that they are getting new jerseys with new material a few games into the season (no idea why).

And now players are allowed to wear tinted visors. We are going to look sweet!

We didn’t lose a game by more than 7 points last year. Better, experienced coaching staff, more talent than Cincinnati, comparable schedule, and as long as the defense improves, I wouldn’t be surprised if we win 10-11 games. It’s a true system offense, Crist should be fine.

Mike on September 1st, 2010 at 11:36 am

Our refusal to not talk about the new jerseys is similar to our refusal not to talk about the Western Michigan game. Our silent protest will send a direct message to the Athletic Department it’s black jerseys or nothing.

Tinted visors are a great touch, though. And clearly a step in the right direction. Is Manti rocking one, do you know?

And 10-11 games is a pipe dream, I think. I was optimistic the past two years…I think I am settling in for another mediocre year (at least based on what the record will show). That way, if I am proven wrong, at least it will be in a positive way.

Sprout on September 1st, 2010 at 11:55 am

@Dale: We’re glad to have you back, along with everyone else…it’s good to see that not everyone’s forgot about us.

@Mike: The only thing I don’t like about the new jerseys is how they filled in the negative space between the ND, it should be blue like the jersey not gold. It looked cheap when I saw a picture of T’eo wearing it but that’s all I was going off of, maybe they look better in person.

I won’t be surprised with 10 wins either, I just think we’ll get the 10th on New Year’s day.

Eric on September 1st, 2010 at 12:02 pm

The Beef ‘O’ Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl is played on New Year’s Day now? Perfect…I just booked my flight.

Sprout on September 1st, 2010 at 12:45 pm

    It doesn’t hurt to hope.

Eric on September 1st, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Is this going to be the format from now on? Sprout on the tube? Lost something on that move….regardless, how can you call BC and Stanford closer than Pitt and USC? It dont make sense. Kelly will be the difference this year for sure. I would not be surprized to be 5-0 vs Pitt mostly from coaching alone. That’s the X-factor boys – something we’re not used to thus the Sprout fallback to dismal feelings of past performances. GO IRISH – totally opposed to the move to Oregon.

House of Rockne on September 1st, 2010 at 1:34 pm

I’ll be back in town for the Michigan game, so we’ll have a normal show for that…but yes, unfortunately until someone invents a hologram machine, this is the format we are stuck with. We hope to continue to work out kinks as we go, so hopefully people stick it out for a little.

With regards to BC/Stanford and Pitt/USC, I think—for me at least—I was basing it on the situation of the games. BC and Stanford are gonna be close, tight played games because of how we match up with the teams. Pitt and USC are more momentum games. Being 5-0 against Pitt as opposed to being 3-2 could cause a big change in confidence in the players. Same thing with USC…with 4 of the 5 games leading up to the Trojans being the softest games on the schedule, momentum and motivation are going to be key. We dropped the last 4 games of the season last year for similar reasons, in my opinion. It’s hard to find motivation against a powerful Pitt team when you just stomped over the bottom feeders of Washington State and then backed it up with your second loss to Navy in 3 years. As a result, we came out flat for 3 quarters and a single flash of greatness in one quarter wasn’t enough to spark enthusiasm in the team to go out and play UConn and Stanford.

Sprout on September 1st, 2010 at 1:55 pm

I’m not sure if Te’o is wearing a tinted visor, but Rudolph is.

Mike on September 1st, 2010 at 2:10 pm

So Sprout – you moved lock stock and barrel to the west coast?

Getting back to predictions for this year – always great insight from you guys for sure but you guys are still basing your thoughts as if Puddin’ Pants was still there. The Irish will not be soft this year although I agree the defense primarily the secondary may be questionable. It is very easy to go into this season based on the memory of some miserable play by the Irish last year but motivation that will elevate the game of these players is the X factor I am talking about. Before you guys signed off last year you basically said stats dont mean shit until you see them play and I totally agree but having watching Kelly coach on the sidelines the last 2 years – we will definitely not be in Kansas anymore and the play of the Irish will reflect that! We will not be waiting 5 years for Kelly’s first signature win – it will come the 3rd game into the season and at the end of the season. GO IRISH! As always – really enjoy the show and glad to see you guys back!

House of Rockne on September 1st, 2010 at 2:32 pm

For any future commenters on the site that don’t yet have a handle, Puddin’ Pants is an amazing one. Nicely done, Rock.

Love the optimism, too. But I’m trying to stay a little more grounded than I have in years past with the Irish. The biggest problem of it all is, even if Kelly goes out and leads us to a 9 or 10 win season there may still very well be plenty to question. Willingham and Weis did that same thing too.

I like Kelly already. I like the changes he’s made so far for the program. But, as past coaching changes have shown us, one solid year (which he hasn’t even done yet) out of the gate doesn’t always mean that things are double rainbows here on out.

And just curious, why do you think a win over Michigan State would be a signature win?

(and yes, I moved lock stock in April out to Oregon. Sucks that I can’t hop a train to ND every weekend now, but other than that it’s been the best move of my life.)

Sprout on September 1st, 2010 at 2:44 pm

Welcome back fellas. Great show. ND 35-24. Bank it.

JerseyShoreNDFan on September 1st, 2010 at 2:58 pm

Re: the new format….I feel bad for you guys. Part of the fun of watching was seeing two brothers getting together to drink beers and talk ND football. Drinking with your bro (I never had one) is not the same as drinking with a flat screen (what I do). I kind of feel like Chang and Eng have been separated.

JerseyShoreNDFan on September 1st, 2010 at 3:15 pm

I do think MSU would be the first signature win – on the road, at night and MSU has been a thorn for the Irish consistantly and they are stout this year. Also this would be coming off two straight wins and first road game. Lots of monkeys to get rid of and Kelly knows it. The guy is down right intense on the sideline w/ players and coaches alike. They say if in a knife fight – take BK w/ you. I am convinced he will come out of the blocks firing. I too have seen the same first year bump w/ a new coach but that is exactly why I feel optimism this year. I tried your approach for awhile but the against all odds thing always comes back and my Dad always said never bet against the Irish. We now have a proven college coach w/ a tenured staff leading the charge. Big difference from the last 3. Sprout – as in Cool Hand Luke – “You gotta get yer mind right Sprout”!”When certain things happen to a man in this situation, he gets rabbit in em…”

Regardless – I remain hopelessly optimistic especially w/ BK at the helm – gonna be a hell of a ride this year!

I do miss the intro – picking the bro up and heading to the train….got to reinsert that into the start of the episode…just aint the same…GO IRISH!

House of Rockne on September 1st, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Big win, yes. Signature win? I wouldn’t define it as that in my book at least.

Regardless, Rock you’ve become my favorite commenter. Love the Cool Hand Luke reference.

(Don’t worry MannyBoy, you’re still my second favorite.)

Sprout on September 1st, 2010 at 5:35 pm

I agree with msu being the first possible loss. My own selfish hopes are that they beat stanford and pitt, I will be attending these games. As far as win-loss goes, I don’t see a team on their schedule they are not capable of beating. I have been drinking the BK koolaide for a couple of years now. I’ve watched him own the big east for three years. He out coaches people every game. If anyone can bring us back to championship form its him. Double digit victories and a BCS win, not just an appearance, a win.

kyndfan on September 1st, 2010 at 6:18 pm

Holy crap I missed a lot in one day. Great re-vamp of the show. It worked out better than I expected.

@”Flameboy”: Had me rollin…but yeah, too early in the season. Unless you’re a Mich. fan already drinking because of the upcoming season. If that’s the case…here’s a tissue.

@Sprout/Eric: Guys…yes WMU is a cupcake, last minute, Kevin White screw up (my guess is he didn’t finish the schedule before leaving). But there is some serious crying coming from the WMU side. Obviously we all know that Kelly used to coach Central Mich. Univerisy, and WMU and CMU are HUGE rivals in the state. ESPN Chicago had an article a a few weeks ago where the WMU coach came off as really being pissed that Kelly is coaching at ND and he’s still coaching at WMU…but didn’t know why he hasn’t moved on yet. ( http://espn.go.com/blog/chicagocolleges/post/_/id/788/kelly-will-face-a-familiar-foe-in-cubit ) Then they proceed to state that WMU has a great record against BCS teams….listing U of Virginia and Indiana Univ. as some of those BCS wins. U of V and IU? Really? Ok…they’re in a BCS conference, but seriously. Anyway, working in the city were WMU is located, I’m hearing people tell me to watch out for WMU because “they KNOW Brian Kelly.” They’re crying…and being cocky. I like it!! It’s gotten me pumped up. I’ll be at the game…(Kzoo Ron as well.)

@Sprout: Good choice of beer. Widmer Brothers have some GREAT brews. When I lived in the Seattle area (back in the day), they used to have a Widber Weizenberry that was an awesome beer for chicks.

    @Barf Bonanza 3: Wish I was 10yrs younger.

@USCL F you Kiffin. I hate you more than Pete and you haven’t even coached a game against us.

@Sprout/Eric: First of all….Mannix and I will be in “da house” for this one, so Eric, I don’t want to see you going to back to your hotel room (USC game last year) to go to bed immediately after the game. Well endowed S. Bend chicks love guys with beards and that doesn’t keep you going after a day of drinking and ND football, there’s always your friendly drug bust going down outside the local pubs (ask Sprout about both of those.) Anyway, Mannix LOVED the idea of handing some Dick Rod footage over to you for the show. He should be done with this project today or tomorrow, so if he thinks “legally” he can pass some footage off to you for your show next week, he’ll give you a shout. Still haven’t gotten the final word on tickets. As soon as we know, we’ll let you know.

@Everyone: I’ll be down at the Purdue game. No tickets, but I’ll be at the Pittsburgh Paints tailgate, which is usually right across from the baseball stadium pressbox (Pole 19?). If you can find it, I can hook you up with some free beer and you can watch the game on a couple ~40″ LCD TVs.

My prediction: 10-2. Losses to MSU and Utah.

Clutch on September 1st, 2010 at 6:37 pm

    For the record…Apple sux.

On a serious note, Eric, what do you have in that bucket? I never see any drippage when you pull out a brewskie. And if “nothing” is the answer, are you drinking warm beer?

trey on September 1st, 2010 at 6:59 pm

    Sprout –

Signature win relative to the Puddin’Pants era which is huge, similar in fact to the formers belt size which in retrospect was on him like Tiger Woods on an incoming text message. BK will have his own which will stand out but he has to start somewhere. First monkey down is the hardest. After watching Chuckers, it will be known as a signature win for Kelly – oh yes, it will be ours!

House of Rockne on September 1st, 2010 at 6:59 pm

Lord – I’m sorry bout that…. he was ok. My bad.

House of Rockne on September 1st, 2010 at 7:03 pm

***Put on my ‘Official Episode Monitor’ hat***

Whoever your censor is needs to be fired…at least written up and a note in their permanent personnel file. I heard a f*** about 9:30 mins in, but you bleeped a number of s**ts. Come on, guys…consistency! What kind of show are you, family friendly or hardcore we-dont-give-a-f***?

    ***Hat off***

Suggestion/Question: What do you guys think about an outtakes episode? I’d love to see your behind-the-scenes and see what kind of f*** ups you guys edit out.

trey on September 1st, 2010 at 7:18 pm

@Mike and @Sprout…I dont know where you guys are reading that players are going to wear tinted visors this year. In the NCAA Rulebook, Rule 1-4-5-s states that Illegal Equipment includes “Eye shields that are not clear, that are tinted, or that are not made from molded, rigid material.”

trey on September 1st, 2010 at 7:30 pm

Sprout, welcome to Oregon! Been watching your show from the get-go and really enjoy it. We usually have a ND kickoff party every year over Labor Day, but this year we are doing it for the Michigan State game. Come on by; there will be a couple of kegs, beer in hand croquet, beer can chicken, and my wife’s famous Jambalaya! I sell beer for a living so I might be able to supply your web-cast brews. My prediction for the season: 11-1; ND has something they haven’t had for about 10 years…depth! It will pay off this year. Go Irish!!

Shorty on September 1st, 2010 at 7:32 pm

@Mannix I don’t even know where to begin with responding to all you wrote. I just hope someone was watching the baby while you typed, cause that musta took an hour. We’ll discuss it all at Michigan.

@Trey that’s an interesting idea. Maybe for the Western game since there clearly won’t be football to talk about. And sorry about the f bombs. Preseason jitters.

Sprout on September 1st, 2010 at 7:34 pm

@House: I also appreciate the Cool Hand Luke reference, one of my all-time favorites. I see where your coming from with MSU, I agree it’ll be a tough road test and one that when we win will be a W that Kelly can hang his hat on. My biggest fear though is what happens the weeks after. I’m hoping mostly for a 3-0 start to see what type of coach the Irish have on their hands. Well that, and it’d just be bad a$% to role through the state of Michigan.

@trey: I’m assuming you didn’t watch this episode on your iPhone or iPad, huh? The bucket’s full of ice, don’t worry no warm beer, there’s also some water that drips but I guess I do a pretty good job of hiding it. Also, I’ll take the fall on the F-bomb that got through…glad to see one of us is on his game this early in the season.

@Clutch: I read every other word of your post and it was still the longest one on here, well done. Looking forward to shot gunning with you this fall, I won’t do one without you like I did two years ago at the Blue & Gold game.

@ JerseyShoreNDFan: It is going to take some time getting used to drinking during the show with a computer screen as a teammate, but I figure most of our viewers do the same thing each week so I’ll get by.

Eric on September 1st, 2010 at 7:35 pm

@Shorty, we’ll be in touch. I’m out of town MSU weekend, but we should definitely catch a game together. Are you in/near Portland?

Sprout on September 1st, 2010 at 7:44 pm

I live in Tualatin but work in Portland. Definitely will catch a game sometime this year.

Does iChat have a “Zordon from the Power Rangers” theme?

Love the show and I think a P-town beer sponsor is in order.

    West Coast!

RC on September 1st, 2010 at 11:51 pm

    @Sprout: Mannix? Come on man.

@Eric: We’re not going to screw around this year….we’re shotgunning cans of Guiness. You just have to be careful not to swallow the nitrogen capsule at the bottom.

Clutch on September 2nd, 2010 at 7:38 am

Haha. Wow, my bad Clutch. I was four vodka tonics deep when replying.

Sprout on September 2nd, 2010 at 7:40 am

Hey guys – I’m back! Glad to see you have a thick skin. Mom always said you criticize those you love. But then my sisters and brothers all grew up whacked. Thank God I’m normal. Oh – and interestingly, Mom has a beard too. At least she trims it. Glad to see you rocking the Widmers Sprout. I love their Heffiweissen.

Enough of tangental stuff. Kelly’s boys WILL send a positive message that there is a new boss in South Bend with the Purdue game. And I agree with the other posters who say the MSU game is a statement game. Sparty not only has legitimately made themselves a top rival by consistently beating the Irish at home and away. They do it by out toughing the Domers physically and mentally. Time to show who is again King of the Hill in this series.

MannyBoy on September 2nd, 2010 at 8:39 am

Sprout- Yes. 2005. World Series. You know, the year they won it?

    Matt L on September 2nd, 2010 at 10:55 am

    Eric –

Dont ever get rid of the coat. Same attachment as Kramers…it fits for sure with the show. Gotta be tough talking w/ the bro through a monitor. For crying out loud at least get an LG and Sprout needs a similar background on the monitor – the same if possible. Print shop does wonders then the adjustment phase from viewers isnt quite so bad – plus you guys will be live as it gets for the Michigan game. GO IRISH!

House of Rockne on September 2nd, 2010 at 4:55 pm

@eric & @Sprout you missed my point. I’m advocating for more exposed F-bombs, not LESS!

trey on September 2nd, 2010 at 7:32 pm

@House: Don’t worry the coat isn’t going anywhere, I’m already planning on having my future son be “Eric from the Subway Alumni Show” for Halloween.

@trey: The bleeping out is a tribute to Arrested Development, that and our Mom doesn’t think we swear. We told her that we’re saying “flock” and bleeping that out. She’s a big fan of the show.

Hey Been watching the show for a while. Love it breaks up the week till saturday. Only thing I want to know is, are you both capable of drinking more than 3 beers a show. Man up show us what you are made of. You can surely knock out a 12 pack in 30 mins. Is football season. Love the show keep it up.

I’m late commenting because I was in LA last week scoping out our tailgate spot for Barf Bonanza. The entire Amato family is in and welcomes anyone to Thanksgiving dinner with us. I will not challenge Sprout’s Watermelon King throne.
