Hey whats up with Busch Light? Run out of Natural Light?
Anyway great show as always, as a Western Grad I am excited about that game. Western always disappoints in a big game so at least ND can count on a victory. Charlie using Hughes on that 4 and 1 was just more of the same kind of crap calls that continue to make me pine for Brian Kelly.
Any update on Floyd being back next week? Go Irish, stuff the Cougars and F*&@ Michigan

    K-zoo Ron on October 28th, 2009 at 7:14 am

after watching that first segment, all I could think about was peperoni pizza… strange.

Sean Maguire on October 28th, 2009 at 7:18 am

Bells is from Kalamazoo and it a good beer that is growing in popularity. I like the Golden Pumpkin.

At least ND isnt scheduling a D1-AA school. Now that would be a disgrace!

    J Doroh on October 28th, 2009 at 7:28 am

Hey guys, great show, but get your numbers straight. BC had 70 yrds rushing. Harris had 38. Stuffed his A$$ didn’t we. Absolutely correct about the goal line play.

Ohio Irish on October 28th, 2009 at 8:51 am

    Hey Guys,

Good show as always, I have to disagree with you on a couple points.

    1) I think the goal line play was the right call (although sitting in the stands I thought we should probably kick the FG) if you were gonna go for it. With the wildcat you even up blockers and you should be able to get one yard. I do think I would have run it with Golden not Hughes…does anyone see BC stopping GT when he needs one yard? He had already injured like 6 BC players on the day.
    2) You said that we continue to make freshman QBs look great…the guy had 3 INTs not sure that qualifies as looking “great”. I actually think this was the best our D has played all year. The run defense was stellar and some people made some plays. If you go back and look at almost all the plays that we let up I think you will notice a trend. I am just gonna say HS and leave it at that. I loved that guy as much as anyone last year, but get him off the field.

Bret on October 28th, 2009 at 10:50 am

@Bret – we’re with you on going for it on 4th. But like I clarified later, running Hughes in the Wildcat is not the correct decision, in my opinion. Allen or Tate in motion or even Goodman behind center would have been a better choice. Allen has a TD pass already and Goodman can throw, so that would have at least made the defense have to think about the pass.

And with regards to Shinskie, yes, the 3 INTs (2 of which where their final two drives when they were scrambling to score, which clearly shows his freshman status) certainly hurt his case, but he had his season high in reception yards against us too. So while that may not be “great” overall, we certainly made him better than we should. And add him to Forcier and Barkley and I think the point we are trying to make is that if you were a freshman quarterback playing against Notre Dame, being scared shitless may not be at the top of your list of emotions going into that game.

Sprout on October 28th, 2009 at 11:04 am

I agree Sprout…I won’t be nominating the ND defensive secondary for any awards anytime soon, but seriously watch the game it was pretty clear to me that BC was mostly picking on a few people in our secondary. One drive it particular they threw to the person that Harrison Smith/Sergio Brown (sometimes they were both “guarding” one reciever) on EVERY play. I actually heard some analysts say that they thought Harrison had a better game this week…seriously? Did they watch the game, I felt like I was on crazy pills. Anyway I guess the point that I am making is I think we might be on the verge of finding some combination on RJ, McNeil, McCarthey, Grey, Slaughter that might create a serviceable secondary. Maybe that’s wishful thinking. Anyway at least we stopped the run, that will help against Navy (threw 0 passes last week), Pitt, and Stanford (Gerhart(sp) is a beast).

Bret on October 28th, 2009 at 11:37 am

    Hey Guys,

Looked like a great time this weekend. Best episode of the season thus far. Loved the AD reference – Happy Birthday Pop Pop!

A couple of things regarding the 4th and Goal. I watched Charlie’s presser about that call and he said before the BC timeout they were going with a different play, and changed up to give a different “look.” As mentioned above I would have preferred to kick the field goal, or at the very least run the wildcat with Golden or Allen and still open up the chance for a pass (a la Allen vs. MSU).

However, that being said, credit the BC player for making a hell of a play. That was a monsterous hit. I’m not sure Hughes knew his name the rest of the game. Either way – take the 3 points Charlie ya knucklehead.

I still don’t understand the Brian Kelly love? Everyone knows he coaches in the Big East and not the SEC right?

Also – here’s my take on Clausen going pro. I think he is probably gone after this year. My opinion (which is meaningless speculation) is that Jimmy probably wants to stay and would love to comeback to try and beat SC and win a National Championship, but the NFL could force his hand.

The NFL owners have opted out of their Collective Bargaining Agreement after the 2010 season. That season will be played without a salary cap. If no new agreement is reached there’s potential for a 2011 lockout. One of the hot button issues for the owners is a rookie pay scale (much like the NBA) to curb the multi-million dollar contracts/holdouts that seem to be spiraling out of a control every summer.

I think Jimmy is probably a mid to late first rounder next year. I also think Jimmy would benefit from another season in college and would likely be a lock for a top 5 pick in the 2011 draft. Still, the business climate of the NFL is very turbulent right now where either decision (whether to stay or to go) will likely be a risk where Clausen could stand to lose or gain millions. Just something to keep an eye on.

Lastly, your show is tired and lacks innovation. More shirtless debauchery and Holiday specials with the A$%# Lawyer.

    Best,

    Kmart

Kmart on October 28th, 2009 at 12:21 pm

Haha, loved your last sentiments Kmart. And you are in luck…the UConn and Stanford weekend will showcase two episodes away from the bar and both may include A$%# Lawyer.

Shoot us an email if you are in town this weekend for the WSU game.

Sprout on October 28th, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Jimmy will not give up the best year of his life to turn
pro. With all the receivers coming back and the development
of the running back he knows he is in for one helluva year.
Will be a couple of questions on the offensive line but many
good linemen return. Please, how many millions does one need
    anyway???

Tim Flenniken on October 28th, 2009 at 1:40 pm

    Kmart -

Thanks for the love. Though Sprout seems to think I’m locked up for the UConn and Stanford episodes, very little has been offered by way of incentives. And now that I know the people want more of me, my list of demands will increase. Well done!

    A$%# Lawyer on October 28th, 2009 at 2:12 pm

Clearly you’re not familiar with how Hollywood works. List of demands? Please. Haven’t you ever seen Fresh Prince? They switched actresses for Aunt Viv so fast that the original one probably didn’t even know what hit her.

And let’s not forget poor Trudy from Family Matters. We all know how that ended up.

Sprout on October 28th, 2009 at 2:25 pm

On the 4th and 1 play, I think Hughes would have gone in had he not made direct head-to-head contact w/ the BC player. If his head would have been half a foot higher, it would have allowed his momentum to continue across the goal line. It looked like he was knocked out by the impact as he fell vertically to the ground, and his whole body appeared to have shut down instantly. Most attempts of that play I think would have been a TD.

TJ on October 28th, 2009 at 2:44 pm

@TJ and Kmart: Agreed that it was a helluva play by the BC guy, and granted if Hughes’ body position is a little different he could’ve fell into the endzone. Regardless of those two things I stand by my opinion that several ND players should have been given the ball before Hughes…Tate, Goodman, Allen.

It paid off for us and Charlie so no worries, although it did give us something to yell about from the last row.

Eric on October 28th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Guys great show as usual! This is one of the few outlets I can visit where the blog is not serving Kool Aid. Quite impressed you guys had the Busch Lights cracked and flowing at the mansion you stayed at. Dont change a damn thing in the format. You guys have a good thing going on and as usual great insight on Irish football!

There remains an element in the Weis play calling and coaching style however that just isnt quite right. Not the right guy if ND wants to move the bar….upwards that is. Actually not quite sure Swarbrick is the guy to see it get done but Weis continues to perplex throughout the year with quesionable play calling.

Eric still needs to expound a bit more – Sprout, you may be hoggin dude. Onwards and upwards – the show is definitely not tired. GO IRISH!

House of Rockne on October 28th, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Also – Sprout will be closer on the final score – I do not believe the Irish have covered the spread yet this year. Yep pretty sure.

House of Rockne on October 28th, 2009 at 3:51 pm

Thanks House. (and everyone else, for that matter)

Back in Season 1, we had done some A-B testing with our female audience and the results showed that they prefered Eric as “quiet and mysterious.”

But I’ll gladly hold back. The less I speak the more I get to drink, right?

Sprout on October 28th, 2009 at 4:00 pm

As usual, we watched the show tonight and were pleased to hear that Chuck and Joe didn’t drink the beer we left for you. Hope you enjoyed it; however we actually planned to bring you beer from Rock Art Brewery in Vermont. They claim their beers “ain’t for no mama’s boy or daddy’s girl.” So you’ll enjoy them. We like the double porter smoked but they have lighter beers as well. Sorry we missed you. Tim and Michele from Vermont

Tim and Michele on October 28th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Right on guys! We’ll keep our eyes peeled for some of that. They might carry it in some stores around here.

Sorry we missed you guys too. Thanks for swinging by though anyways.

Sprout on October 28th, 2009 at 4:27 pm

Great show guys. I enjoy your conversations on the games and the Irish. Just remember, it’s easy to second guess the coach on Monday. It doesn’t look like he should have used that one but if it had worked, we would be praising him. And if you want to drink a real beer, get some LaTrappe Quadruple. It’s for real men.

Joe on October 28th, 2009 at 5:07 pm

Weird opening to the show this week. It is strange seeing you interact with other people. I always just thought that you were CGI characters or holograms or some such thing created by huge faceless corporations to sell Magic Hat beers and Zeke Motta jerseys. In any case, we’re beyond the halfway mark to the season and the USC question has been answered in the negative again and I think a general malaise has set in on the ND Nation. Who really cares anymore? It’s another year and we realize we’re no closer to the elite programs than before. I only wish Clausen had bitch smacked Gunnell in the lip just so there’d be something interesting to talk about. Anyway, on to San Antonio which incidentally has one of the biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the U.S. There are a lot of Irish people in the area and they love to party, so that’s who will be at this game. It should be a blast party-wise. The game? Not so much.

JerseyShoreNDFan on October 28th, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Guys…come on…. Bells from Kalamazoo (The home of the WMU Broncos) is found all over the place outside of the state. I believe it’s one of, if not the, most popular brewery in Michigan. Also, Founders, Arcadia and Dark Horse are all breweries within an hour of the WMU campus. Although I give you props for New Holland. Their “Mad Hatter” is on my short list of my favorite IPAs. It’s one of those IPAs that after drinking several, you have to brush your teeth with “Topol Smoker’s Tooth Polish”
    http://www.retrojunk.com/details_commercial/8114/
to get the hops taste off your teeth.

Guys, our secondary straight out blooows. I see that Blanton is now inflicted with L1R1, or what is more commonly known as Lambert-Richardson Disease. It commonly affects young Notre Dame cornerbacks by fusing the Atlas (1st cervical vertebrae) to the 2nd cervical vertebrae in such a way that the skull is always turned and locked toward the sideline (or impending receiver) during passing plays. This inhibits the the skull from rotating in the opposite direction, or in other words, towards the ball.

Blanton and Walls used to show so much potential, now that they don’t look for the ball, their almost worthless, except when a ball is tipped. I still think they’re sharing recipes with the receiver as they run down the field on defense.

This type of play started back when Weis took the coaching job. Since we’ve seen Walls and Blanton show this evolution of always looking at the receiver and not even attempting to play the ball, is it one of Weis’ coaches teaching this type of defensive play?
I’m disgusted. But hey…we can stop the run. You know, if our defense was just a touch better, we would be undefeated, Clausen would be nipping at Tebow’s heels for the Heisman, we would be ranked in the top 5 and all of us would be off our blood pressure medicine.

Did anyone notice the new menu at the ND concession stand this week? Right between the popcorn and hot dogs you can now purchase 3 packs of Nitro Glycerin for chest pain for $5. That is such a rip off.

Clutch on October 28th, 2009 at 6:33 pm

Tate should have gotten it and jumped over the line for the 1 yard TD run. He shown his lack of fear of jumping and his vertical against UW. He would have been able to jump over the line for the yard

Mike on October 28th, 2009 at 6:54 pm

    Yo,
Love the show. Thanks for all of the hard work, including the people off cam that help you out.

Sorry about the fan telling you to sit down.

@Eric: You are wrong above about the Hughes wildcat call, though. I love the way that guy carries the ball. None of the others you mention should’ve gotten it before him.

Andrew Wilson on October 28th, 2009 at 9:41 pm

@Mike And his his leaping ability in the MSU game when he jumped “Mosh Pit” style into the MSU band.

Clutch on October 29th, 2009 at 5:03 am

Guys, tip: if you’re filming in the dark, get a light.

I think Jimmy is the best QB if he comes out, so he’s probably gone after this year. Tebow will never be an NFL QB, Bradford has serious injury concerns, McCoy is a bit undersized. Jimmy is a top 5 pick, Bradford is the #2 QB, probably #15 or so. McCoy is top 30, and Tebow is a 2nd-3rd rounder.

If you dudes wanna come down to San A for the game, I have one extra ticket. You two could fight over it. Planning a huge tailgaiter, so come on down! Just for the record, San A has a fairly large ND fan base. I go to the ND Baseball tourney every year and we fill half the stadium for BASEBALL. Dallas is only 4 hours away and has a HUGE fanbase. GO IRISH!
