Old and angry. And that only means my sick addiction to ND football nears intervention. 34 by the way…and don’t get me going with the lacrosse ball, that was a present dude, a present!

Haha…man that was a crazy night.
Also, for all the folks, here are some pics from the game from our Facebook page: http://tinyurl.com/USCpics
There is not a chance in the world Urban is coming to ND. Zero. That said, Bill Cowher would be the best coach ever. We should make that happen.
And to be fair to Butch Davis, 24-34 in Cleveland is a hell of a good job.

I’m surprised that nobody has thought of Mike Leach.
A) Emphasizes academics and integrity.
B) Can coach up players as well as draw up plays.
C) Has taken his current program to new heights.
D) Can easily recruit players to South Bend with as much success as recruiting to Lubbock, Texas.
E) Is in a pissing match with his Athletic Director about not getting paid enough.
F) Likes pirates…
He would be a great hire AND IT IS POSSIBLE TO GET HIM!

Hey Guys…Tough loss, my heart was broken. I really do beleive in Charlie Weis, and think continuity is going to be the best thing for this team. Coach Weis needs to stay. And this may be wishful thinking, but if Jim Clausen won that game for us he may have won the Heisman, and may have been more likely to leave after this year. Charlie and Jim will dominate next year if they both stay, and I pray that they do. Go Irish, FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!!!

Charlie will be here for a long time.
That is all.

Guys, I’m hoping Charlie comes back next year because it means a couple good things for ND. One, they probably won out. Two, they keep a good to possibly great recruiting class together. If he is let go, I wouldn’t mind throwing Tommy Tuberville’s name into your possible coaches conversation. He is good friends with Weis, so he could keep him on as the O coordinator, helping with the buyout and keeps our offense firing. Also, his defensive background could fix our biggest hole, and his record, before trying to get gimmicky with the spread, was great for and SEC team. Just a couple things I thought I’d throw out there.
jonesy on October 21st, 2009 at 7:46 am
When typing Saban, spell check wants me to change it to Satan. I think that is a sign.
Bliss on October 21st, 2009 at 7:53 am
Great call. Thanks for going with Charlie for now. Hopefully, your discussion of the alternatives will get the CW detractors to think about the reality of the alternatives. Namely, there is no likely candidate who can do a better job.
One example, Jeff Tedford. Great coach, but not only hasn’t he won the PAC-10, but his teams have no defense in a conference that is offense oriented. How is that an improvement? Its not. Jeff can coach QBs and run an offense, but I don’t believe that he does it as well as CW or, at least any better. No one works harder or recruits better than CW.
Kelly is having a great year at UC. However, that’s in the Big East. That is not an apples and apples comparison. They said our schedule was soft, but let’s look reconsider that at year’s end. I think that the numbers will show that it wasn’t as soft as expected.
Go Irish! Beat Fredo!

You guys left good ol’ Lou Holtz off the list… He can’t wait to coach again… I’d take him.
Kasey on October 21st, 2009 at 8:29 am
@Kasey: Let’s not say things that we don’t mean. I love what Lou did for this program but God help us all if that comes to be.
Chris Peterson from Boise State should have probably been on that list. I think Weis stays and succeeds though.
Dascenzo on October 21st, 2009 at 9:34 am
Richt – no way. Take it from someone who lives down in GA. That guy would never, ever last at Notre Dame. Notre Dame won’t allow the “Saint” cover, and Richt learned it from Master Bobby – “Boys will be boys, but I love Jesus”. That will play down here in the SEC, but not with an administration with half a brain.
Tubberville – if Charlie had to go, Tommy would be the perfect choice.
atlantadomer on October 21st, 2009 at 9:46 am
All this is a moot issue about Charlie staying should the Irish drop to BC and Pitt…I think Charlie knows what could be coming – his aplogetics at halftime defending his decision to punt instead of try a fieldgoal and his apolgetics after the game and during the press conference speak volumes.
Redefining the term win or “W” or victory to a comparative analysis that a really really close loss is somehow the same thing does nothing in my book to inspire players or reflect the qualities of a no nonsense tough minded coach. To in essence be content to be losing by however many points at halftime should never be verbalized at any point by any coach worth his weight – no pun intended.
Also the head coach is responsible for all aspects of the team, offense – defense – special teams. For other bloggers to separate this out and focus responsbility elsewhere other than the head coach, misses the whole point.
It is time to give a lot of other players starts and game time on defense. There has been no notable improvement thus far and an injection of new energy is apparently much needed! Besides I am sure the secondary are still winded from being dragged down the field for 15-20 yards trying to effect a tackle multiple times during the entire game..
Geez…..
House of Rockne on October 21st, 2009 at 10:32 am
I’m still on charlie’s side for a couple of reasons. One of the reasons is a little more of a theory, but I think there is the potential that it is a valid theory.
This is his first ever head coaching job. Guys like Saban , Spurrier , Meyer , and many more all had at least one Head Coaching job under their belts before coaching at a major program. True, Charlie coached in the NFL, but all he had to do was worry about coaching QB’s and running the offense. It is much different when you have to run an entire team, as opposed to preparing for one aspect of a game.
Just like he made the right move firing John Latina and finding Frank Verducci, he will fire John Tenuate and/or C Brown and bring in the right guy to run the defense.
He has gradually improved as his talent has come in. My only knock on him thus far has been his choice of D coordinators, and the fact that Harrison Smith isn’t on the scout team yet.
Hopefully over the next 6 games and next year pending we will see him improve in his game management and playcalling. I don’t understand why he went to Aldridge on that 4th and 1. The kid hadn’t played since Week 1.
The fact is that these kids do believe in him, and they believe in ND for a reason.
Sprout……..I wrote this before the last ten minutes of the show. Amen to what you said….Point the finger at Tenuta and Brown and get them the fock out of here.
I think 6 in a row to BC is motivating enough. I agree with Eric is saying that I would be more nervous of a letdown if we had won.
Great show again. I would put my addiction to ND football up there with yours.
Rob on October 21st, 2009 at 10:37 am
Good show.
I agree with Sprout’s assessment, Brown and Tenuta have to go if anybody’s going.
NBC should rename their ND football time slot, “Who Wants to be an Offensive Star?” I am sick and tired of ND making offensive players (i.e. Anthony Davis, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, Jamarcus Russell, Anthony McCoy…) into superstars. It’s killing me!
My hate list:
1. USC – L
2. BC – ?
3. Michigan – L
4. MSU – W
Let’s go Irish!
IrishRover on October 21st, 2009 at 10:56 am
For the record I believe I said “There’s no such thing as a moral victory”, but I was proud of the way our team fought back. God that sucked though. Is there a doubt in anyone’s mind that we’re scoring that last TD on a Michael Floyd fade? F-
I don’t think Charlie should be fired. That’s not to say that I love the guy, but we’ve been here before. Unless we truly have THEE guy who can put us over the top, why should we spin the coaching carousel again? We’ve been doing it since Lou with Davies,(George Ha),Ty, and Weis. Firing Charlie without a legitimate replacement would just set the program back more.
As mentioned the guy is a great recruiter and a great offensive schemer, and while he hasn’t won the “big game” yet- I don’t think he’s ever had the better team talent-wise in any of those big games.
Replace Tenuta and find someone who can get this defense firing on all (or at least some) cylinders.
You guys are a pretty big joke. This is the second time I’ve watched your videos, and from what I can tell, you wouldn’t know a football film room if it kicked you in the nuts. Keep entertaining equally unenlightened alums, but honestly, very little in this is ever meaningful.
The Jim on October 21st, 2009 at 12:01 pm
I think that getting Urban Meyer is within the realm of possibility, probable in fact. He’s got a low buyout on his present deal (500K I’ve read). He’s done all he needs to accomplish at UF and is approaching the max of what a state school can justify spending on a coach. He would be a coaching legend if he came and turned this program around. Look, I like Charlie, he’s a Jersey guy like me but he’s just not getting the job done. His two best season records were with teams filled with Ty’s players. Bowling Green, Utah and Fla. all improved dramatically and rather quickly under Meyer. We need him in South Bend to right the ship and the sooner the better. Charlie has his heart in the right place with Pass Right and Hannah and Friends, etc. but he’s just not getting the job done. By the way, what’s he doing being involved with the BC player (Herzlich?) that has cancer? I am not cynical enough to think that it’s all trumped up by some PR firm to improve his image, but it kind of disturbs me. If you really have the kid’s best interests at heart then why publicize it? What does he think he is, Ambassador of Football? The best charity is the anonymous kind. Charlie out, Urban in. Mark it down, this will happen.
JerseyShoreNDFan on October 21st, 2009 at 12:03 pm
@The Jim – I suppose I can’t harp too much on you since you’ve only watched two episodes…but yeah, I mean…if we took ourselves so seriously that we sat around analyzing game tape in a film room all day I’d kick myself in the nuts too. If you want enlightened game analysis you should go check out ESPN with all the other enlightened folks.
Good show as always. I liked your point about ND’s offense showing that they really can score on anyone. I checked and the last time USC gave up 27 points was the 2ND GAME 2007 against Nebraska when they won 49-31 and before that was the lose they had to OSU (the Beavs) in 2006. They just don’t give up points and ND showed they have a for real top 10 offense. I will be at the game this week making my annual trip out from graduate school in Arizona to see ND play on a cold rainy day. GO IRISH! BEAT EAGLES!
Bret on October 21st, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Charlie’s not going anywhere….here for the duration of his contract plus..tough coaching job with no one in the wings to takeover.
Also, ND needs to get back to beating the crap out of other teams with a running game…see the Cheerios Bowl…Bettis and offensive line domintate second half and beat Florida.
Go for the field goal. Wrong decision.
Don’t go for the field goal. Wrong decision.
Pass. Wrong decision
Run: Wrong decision.
Brilliant, simply brilliant.
Gerald W. McCabe on October 21st, 2009 at 4:32 pm
Great show guys, first time I’ve checked it out.
@stephen — …And Jags got fired for interviewing for a NFL job. He wants an NFL job and would leave at the first chance he gets.
@Gallagher — Kelly runs a decent program that feasts on inferior opponents. The buyout is large, the chance he’d want to leave is only average, and the risk/reward on it is no different then Gary Patterson or Boise’s coach now. Each of them has an equal opportunity to become a good coach or the next Dan Hawkins at Colorado. How’d that work out?
Dan on October 21st, 2009 at 4:45 pm
I don’t understand ND’s infatuation with Weis. ND deserves better and can do better. Weis consistently give the impression of being a low-class guy.
Here’s a great dark horse candidate–TONY DUNGY. Yes, he retired but people change their minds. He looks a little lost on TV. Swarbrick and he have got to be good friends from Indianapolis–and what a class act Tony Dungy is–even religious and wrote a book about his faith. He’s not Catholic, mind you, but isn’t an ecumenical movement still alive?
Steve on October 21st, 2009 at 5:38 pm
@Gerald – who specifically are you addressing? Your comment seems to have a failure to state. (you can thank my lawyer brother for that phrase…or perhaps I wanted to say you’re making an argument by scenario…I’m not sure. This lawyer stuff is tough.)
The fact that you would think I have any idea of when to use WHOM or WHO really begs the question of my intelligence. (And yes, I’m assuming I used that in all kinds of improper ways…most likely making me look even stupider…all in an attempt to get under your skin.)
Sprout, it’s “failure to state a claim”. Also, why was your F bomb not bleeped this week? I was just starting to adapt to the whole Arrested Development homage thing.
JerseyShoreNDFan on October 21st, 2009 at 8:35 pm
I know, I know…the editor really dropped the ball on that. (which in this case is me.)
It’s ironic because we missed one in last year’s show about BC as well. I guess we just hate them that much that one of them has to slip through the cracks.
Also, I never taught you that phrase. I barely even attended Civil Procedure.
Not trying to hijack the conversation here; the critics are out this week and I’m in protective big brother mode. No one points out that you two are morons except me.
“Yeah he is from BC, but so was a guy named Leahy”
Um, Leahy was at ND before he was at BC. He played for Knute.
Pabst Blagledorf on October 21st, 2009 at 8:44 pm
My problem with Weis is simple. While he is a great X&O guy and he gets great recruits, I don’t see the team as a whole learning the fundamentals of the game. The greatest schematic advantage in the world will fall flat if it is not built on a foundation of strong fundamentals.
Two years ago, it was the “zone blocking” fiasco. This year we see the fancy blitzes on defense, but very poor tackling. It’s what I call “coaching the team out of a game” by trying to be too fancy.
The thing is that the guys who get recruited to play Division I football out of high school probably don’t need very strong fundamentals, because they are vastly superior athletes relative to their high school brethren. But at the college level, that advantage is gone. There is no level of football (or anything else for that matter) where basic instruction in pure fundamentals is needed than at the college level.
So this is my suggestion for when we do bring in a new coach (which I don’t think will be for next season – I think Weis will be here for a while): Bring in someone who is an educator or can at least place true educators throughout the coaching staff. One good X&O guy who can not only call plays, but also make crisp adjustments on each side of the ball is probably enough.
But like I said, if the team can’t do the little things like block, tackle, see the field, play their assignments, throw, catch, run and keep their balance doing it all, the best X&O guy will never make the team a winner at this level.
ND du Lac on October 21st, 2009 at 10:58 pm
Coach Suggestion #1: Chris Peterson, Boise State
The only reason why this guy beats Oregon every year and beat Oklahoma in the BCS along with winning at least 11 games every year is because he out coaches his opponents. Give this guy the athletes at ND, and he’s stomping over SC and Michigan every year. Oh yeah, and his team is 4th in the BCS
Suggestion #2: Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech
Bring back the option. Similar to Peterson, he didn’t have the athletes at Navy, but was able to out scheme his opponents and win with very sub par athletes at Navy. Now that he is at Ga Tech with better athletes, he’s number 11 in the country by running the option. Give him some top ten recruiting classes at ND, sky’s the limit.
Mike on October 22nd, 2009 at 10:42 am
Guys please help me to feel better about this. Tell me Charlie Weis is STAYING next year. The program will benefit so much more if he stays from many angles. Recruiting would benefit, team morale would benefit, and the offenese would continue to florish. No more change, tell me Coach Weis will stay please. One more things guys; did anyone hear Beano Cook say that his sources indicate that Jim Clausen is leaning towards leaving after this year? Any thoughts on that?
ND83shark on October 22nd, 2009 at 1:58 pm
You lads need to get off the crack and back on the Magic Hat.
The show is looking quite tired with little to no innovation. Shall this season be the last?
F*** Michigan, though, will always be in vogue.
In 2010, 12-1 will not be good enough.
2012 Ohio Domer on October 22nd, 2009 at 3:18 pm
@Ohio Domer – unfortunately, we just extended our contract 20 more years with Swarbrick, looks like you’re stuck.
We’re all for feedback though, so feel free to shoot us an email if you’ve got ideas. Saying the show has no innovation but then saying we need to switch back to the same beer we drank for a year seems to be begging the question. [ed. note: A$%# Lawyer, did I use that correctly? I feel like I'm really close on this one.]
But no seriously, shoot us an email and maybe we can incorporate some of your thoughts into the show. More so, I’d personally love to know why 12-1 is not good enough for next year.
Great, creative show guys; just discovered it this year. Charlie needs to stay… he is turning it around. But if he has to go– check out Randy Edsall from UCONN… great football mind and program builder but check out the news reports and what he has done to lead his players, student body, taking care of the parents & girl freind of Jazz Howard. #6 was the outstanding kid stabbed to death Sat night in a senseless act of violence on a campus almost a safe and serene as that of ND. This coach is a maybe better than Lou H. as he walks the walk If you thought Pass Right made a statement and gives you the goose bumps, check out this guy as an inspiration… as a military history buff, his determination and demeaner reminds me of reading of COL Joshua Chambelain on Little Round Top in the battle of Gettysburg… to quote Rocket from last weeks pep rally– it ain’t no game and neither has been this week at UCONN… Coach Edsall is the real deal– his guys loved him before but now he has 105 loyal sons, well no its 104 now as one is now in the big Husky dogpound in the sky. Beat BC and beware the Huskies on 21 Nov.

Dfence wins championships. It is a worn out statement because it is a true one. Weis has never fielded a championship caliber dfense. It is for this reason that he needs to go. ND should never accept mediocrity and that is what Weis’s tenure has been. 0-5 v usc, 2-3 v mich and mich st, I could go on and on, but you guys already know the embarassing numbers. A great offense can not make up for a pitiful dfense. I can not envision Weis winning a national championship, and if he is not going to win a championship he is wasting everyone’s time and putting us all through agonising pain.
As far as who the next head coach should be, Brian Kelly has had immediate success where ever he has been. He won a div. II title, won a mac title at central mich, and in his 3rd year at cinncinati he is going to win his 2nd big east title. He has had starters go down and has not missed a beat. He is a COACH as well as a winner. If he were to come to ND I believe he could have a Lou Holtz type era. If he were to come next year with the talent that will be returning, a bcs victory would be the worst he would do. Half way through the season ND would be in the national title conversation instead of unranked. He only gets paid a little over 1 million at cinncinati, I believe ND could offer him enough to come over. Gooooooo Irish!! (Go Irish!!)beeeeeat fredo!! (beat fredo!!)
kyndfan on October 24th, 2009 at 10:27 am
If Weis goes, Jimmy leaves early, Dayne Leaves for another school. Tate leaves early, Michael floyd leaves early, All incoming recurits decommit. Why do Some Irish fans have no patients. It is not college football of old anymore there is talent all across the country now and Weis is pulling it from everywhere. We haven’t had a team with this much talent in along time. I don’t agree with everything he does at times but that comes with the territory. We will be fine stop rushing to judgement. If you can do better then if the job becomes vacant at anytime then why don’t you all applie for it and lets see how you do, you armchair quaterbacks.
