It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t as easy as everyone would have hoped. But we won. And for the moment, that’s all that matters. Sparty can take his flag home. The streak is broken.
It should be noted that those Great Lakes teams were absolutely loaded with talent. There were tons of great collegiate players (and a number of ex-pros) cherry picked for that squad. Not a bunch of scrubs by any means.

Okay, I just found your show last week and have been watching your archived episodes. After much viewing, I have to say…you guys ROCK! I’m going to the USC game, and I hope to see you at poll 13.
BTW, I can get on board with your “F**k Michigan”, but even more, F**k BC!
Jolene on September 23rd, 2009 at 5:52 am
Watch out at Purdue. My Dad and some co-workers went down a couple years ago and got thrown out for being too drunk. Yes..I said my dad.
I heard Charlie takes the team to Big Boy at halftime, which is why we are always so sluggish in the 3rd quarter.
Isn’t the blitz supposed to present itself as a surprise to the opposing offense? If you know that the team you’ll be playing next Saturday runs the Blitz almost every down, it allows you all week to prepare for it. The players expect the Blitz each down, which it then loses it’s “surprise attack” factor that makes it unique.
Let me throw it at you from a different angle. Which sounds like a more effective game plan. Being a defensive coordinator that primarily runs the blitz as the defensive scheme, or being an offensive coordinator that primarily runs the Hail Mary as their offensive scheme? Yeah…it doesn’t sound so appealing in that context.
Tenuta’s Blitzing scheme sounded great when he was first brought in, but now….not so much.

I’m with Jolene on her thoughts about BC. They kept us from winning a national championship in 1993 and have rubbed our noses in the ground just about every year. (I never want to see those green jerseys again). I hope we stomp them bigtime this year. Great show, just picked you up off the ndnation link.
Joe on September 23rd, 2009 at 9:40 am
Good points, Clutch. Especially on the Big Boy’s insight. I love me some Big Boy’s. (And knowing that about your dad explains so much about you and Mannix. Ha.)
Joe/Jolene, we’re right with you on BC. Can’t stand ‘em.
Little known fact: I was accepted to BC but refused to go and instead went to a college I knew NOTHING about until after I got accepted to it.
I agree totally. It felt like a loss. I remember calling it a disappointing loss to my friend, and swearing a lot about the defense. At the same time….we won and that is all that matters.
The Wildcat is a nice wrinkle, but sort of predictable between the 20’s because Allen isn’t going to throw a rope when trying to hit a man running a 15yard out. I do think it is good in the redzone from time to time, as shown on that TD pass that allen threw.
I predict that Kamara will fill in quite nicely. He lost his job to Floyd, and BGI wrote that he really worked his ass off in the offseason. The competition factor, and the fact that Floyd took his job last year hopefully has served as a wake up call. He won’t give us the YAC that floyd gives us, but he is a big target in the redzone.
This is where Holtz would take over the D. I’m not saying he take over the D at all, but this is where Weis needs to step up and not be stubborn to make a change. If that means being more conservative and not blitz 24/7, then so be it. I would be happier with that approach, otherwise we are asking too much of our DB’s to play cover 1 all the time.

Well a win is a win, give it to Clausen he showed some heart after the injury, It looks like Golden Tate is going to have a massive year. However the last 2 weeks have gotten me as down as I have ever felt about Charlie. 480+ yards to a team that was beaten by Central Michigan the week before? What the heck was that. Given that Purdue was just beaten by a MAC squad this week could also be a last second nail biter, brother. Anyone notice how Brian Kelly has Cincinnati playing?
K-zoo Ron on September 23rd, 2009 at 10:43 am
Good show guys, although it would be nice if you watched the game before you reviewed it. We’ll be at Purdue this weekend, most likely tailgating in the IM fields. Go Irish!
Bert on September 23rd, 2009 at 11:26 am
Frank Leahy, Jr. on the sidelines in a headset……classic.
JerseyShoreNDFan on September 23rd, 2009 at 11:27 am
@Bert Like I said in the show, I was at a wedding so I was watching the game on my phone. Can’t see every play.
We’ll try and swing by the IM fields…is that where the majority of tailgating happens?
@Clutch: Great perspective with the ‘hail Mary’, never really thought about it that way. I’ve definitely lost a little bit of faith in Tenuta’s system, but I will give him credit that he’s got his guys going full go all day, it’s just they don’t seem suited best for the system.
@RB: I like your thinking on Kamara. It would definitely be nice to reclaim his spot on the team so hopefully he plays with a chip on his shoulder in that sense. I think we’re still going to be in for a heavy dose of Shaq, especially this game, in hopes that we can get him more game experience for bigger games down the road.
good lord you boys acted like a couple little girls. Reluctantly, “a win is a win”. F’n a right. Over sparty, damn right.
By the way sport – it’s Leahey, pronounced LAhey, not Leehey.
I’ve always enjoyed you guys a lot. But your last show sucked.
Tough love.
ndsqueak on September 23rd, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Yes, beware when going to Purdue. Their fans are horrible. I’ve heard stories of beers being dumped and overly obnoxious fans.
B on September 23rd, 2009 at 2:10 pm
We’re sorry we let you down @ndsqueak. We’ll try harder next week.
Thanks for the warnings on Purdue. We’ll be sitting with a large group of Purdue fans as it is, so hopefully they will serve as buffers and all beverages will land on them.
Good show guys – looking forward to Wednesdays now!
Kamara hopefully will step up however he dropped a lot of balls last time he was playing regularly. The defense is a mystery – Purdue has a tremendous runner – if they mix it up w/ play action pass it WILL be another nail biter in West Lafayette – mark my words. GO IRISH!

The only time I made it to Ross Aide was my junior year (Davie’s very last game). Friday night we went to my roomate’s best friend’s frat, the Delta Chi house. If some drunk girl at the frat party asks you if you’re wearing notre dame stuff because you’re on the team the answer is “yes, i’m the kicker.” I don’t remember the pregame festivities, they must have been good. I do vividly remember that the “world’s largets drum” had a big tear in it by the end of the game, I got a great picture of it. Have fun!
NDcivil03 on September 23rd, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Why the Zeke Motta jersey? Also what is on the shelf above Sprouts head on the shelf?
Matt on September 23rd, 2009 at 10:32 pm
I went to ND @ Purdue in ‘89 and sat in the bleachers. We dumped stuff the the students with little gold hard hats on who cleaned up under the bleachers during the game. I took that as a sign that they wanted to have stuff dumped on them. Is that sill part of the the student job program at Purdue?
Matt on September 23rd, 2009 at 10:48 pm
Notre Dame-Army 1995 The stop by Ivory Covington at the endzone is the best in Irish history in my opinion.
Gipper 78 on September 24th, 2009 at 2:42 am
@Matt – It’s a custom jersey. 17 just so happens to be my lacrosse number from my playing days. I often find myself asking though, “Hey Zeke, why the Sprout jersey?”
And above my head are our college diplomas…proof that we did indeed not attend Notre Dame and are true Subway.
Why do people have weddings during football season? I went to one a few weeks ago and used my ScoreMobile BB app. It wasn’t in a church, so maybe that isn’t as bad?
Bliss on September 27th, 2009 at 9:25 am
Hey Spout and Eric, how drunk were you guys going into the game? I only got to catch 1/2 the game as I had to work until 9:30pm (sucked) .. I am glad I got to see the late charge at the end of the game, but dang, my nerves were getting worked! Hope you guys make it home safely! Go Irish!
What a game but it looks bad for us for the rest of the year. Everybody is hurt and nobody is stepping up except for Jimmy. Please somebody step up and catch those passes and run that ball!!!!!! Pick up some Defense!!!! Great show and GO IRISH!!!!! Irish fan in GA always getting always hounded by bulldog fans.
