Episode 52

Drinking the Kool Aid already?

Well, with one win in the books it seems like a lot of people are talking like Kelly is King. But the Loyal Sons aren’t drinking the Kool Aid yet. Since when is a well coached, disciplined team something to herald greatness about rather than just expect at Notre Dame? Are we encouraged? Yes. But let’s see how we handle Michigan.

Oh God, I’ve become a ‘First!’ loser

trey on September 7th, 2010 at 7:56 pm

…and so SO true on the signoff. F*** EsPN in the dirty little May-hole they have up there in Bristol.

trey on September 7th, 2010 at 8:16 pm

I love when you two pretend to look each other in the eye. And yes, Fuck Michigan.

    @Dascenzo on September 7th, 2010 at 8:37 pm

We actually rigged up a very complicated system of mirrors so that we are in fact looking at each other.

Sprout on September 7th, 2010 at 8:41 pm

Prachi was very confused as to what Sprout was looking at. I literally said, “Eric” 10 times before she shouted, “I think he’s looking at your brother!” like it was the cutest thing in the world. I don’t think she’s listened to me since early 2009.

    A$%# Lawyer on September 7th, 2010 at 8:52 pm

So nd qu l ty on Spr t was gr at! Good job Calabrese and Bennett Jackson…..Jersey in the house. Represent. This week ND 27-UM 24. I thought that independently of Sprout (if that’s what he said). As for a signature win, nobody cares if Weis won or lost to Pitt, we only will remember him not beating USC when we look back at his era. Trojans are the signature win and its perfect this year, they will claim we can only beat them when they are on a down turn.

JerseyShoreNDFan on September 7th, 2010 at 10:23 pm

P.S. I haven’t heard, did they yank Reggie’s Heisman yet?

JerseyShoreNDFan on September 7th, 2010 at 10:26 pm

Not sure what we can call a signature win until we get to game week, if we beat Mich and they go on to have a good year but tank the rest of the way then what? if we go 7-5 and Beat SC thats great that we beat SC but were still 7-5. I think well know a signature win when we get there.

Just win a big game, aka win saturday!

    F^ck ESPN AND F^CK Michigan!!

blacknbluengold on September 7th, 2010 at 10:44 pm

Sorry for not getting my pics to you guys in time…and not having any pics of hot chicks. I’m old.

White Field? WTF?! Don’t be late to the game because I think you’ll be in a different time zone up there.
If you guys get there by 8am, you can park next to the Linebacker for $20 and tailgate there. You’ve got to get there early though because it fills up fast. Plus it’s right next to the Liquor store and I think they allow RVs. Give it a try at least before you head up north.

Mannix and I will have our traditional game day first beer at the ‘Backer at ~8:30. You’re welcome to join us before your trek to the Great White North.

Clutch on September 8th, 2010 at 6:34 am

Agree with the USC pick for signature win. Last game of the season, taking momentum into a bowl game, probably have some swing recruits on-hand for the game, and this is one game CW couldn’t notch a W for even in his best season. The other half of that equation is if USC does really really poorly this fall, this will be their “bowl game.” All the more so if they have a great season, b/c the taste left in their mouths from the match with ND will stay there all year.

Dan on September 8th, 2010 at 6:37 am

I applaud you two for not getting carried away with last weeks win. Has Kelly brought in a new, more healthy atmosphere to ND football? Yes. Will this mean more wins in 2010? Yes. Does Kelly have the personel he needs to win a national championship….Not yet. Defensively, we are improved, but do not have the Dline and LB depth to compete at the highest level. In three short years, ND will be among college footballs elite. Until then, enjoy the show.

Gallagher on September 8th, 2010 at 7:22 am

Weis never won a game that he wasn’t supposed to win. He had a lot of almosts. But this isn’t horseshoes or hand gernades it is college football. Kelly’s signature win will be that game that he wins that it wasn’t expected for him to win. If that is Pitt or USC I don’t know. Because if those teams are below average this year we should beat them.

Chris Kerr on September 8th, 2010 at 7:44 am

@Dan Agreed that SC would be the signature win especially because it’s the last game of the season. Don’t know if SC would treat it like a bowl game though. They play UCLA the next week at the Rose Bowl. With a Pac10 championship their only consolation, that game might be bigger.

Irish Rover on September 8th, 2010 at 7:51 am

@Chris Kerr, you bring up a great—and now seemingly obvious—point about signature wins that we didn’t think of. Thanks.

@Clutch, I will be in South Bend Friday night so I might swing by the Backer in the morning depending on what time the RV gets in. I’ll shoot you my cell…but I think you might already have it.

@A$%# if you two are watching together, I hope you at least hit the play button twice so our analytics can count the viewing as two views. You’re killing our advertising numbers.

Sprout on September 8th, 2010 at 8:15 am

While optimism reins supreme in the early part of the season I haven’t heard any comments yet about how Michigan easily handled UConn last Saturday while the Irish managed to lose to them last year with a veteran QB. I wish things were different- been a fan of the Irish for over 40 years including the 4 years I enjoyed in South Bend as a student. ND continues to need some very strong athletes on the defensive line. We need to be able to pressure the QB without blitzing. I am very much afraid we won’t have much luck this weekend stopping Robinson just as UConn could not. Not only that- our offense is young, untested and unless it plays a perfect game it is likely to be a very long afternoon for the Irish. Say it isn’t so but I have a bad feeling……………..

    Greg-Irish'72 on September 8th, 2010 at 9:23 am

I specifically got on this afternoon to hear you guys bash the Obituary that ESPN’s Wright Thompson wrote and somehow actually made the air on College Game Day

    Very brief, but àpropos remark

At least appreciated that Fowler immediately was making fun of it as soon as they came back to the live broadcast

We will win this weekend because of the stupidest nickname ever – Shoelace

Frommy on September 8th, 2010 at 10:10 am

@Frommy, while an hour could easily be devoted to bashing ESPN and Wright Thompson, we thought it best to not even waste our breathe on ‘em.

Bunch of clowns. It’s one thing to make a piece on ND going through rough times, no one is going to argue that. But to bring religion into it the way they did is inexcusable.

Sprout on September 8th, 2010 at 10:17 am

    @Irish Rover:

I stand corrected (thought ND was SC’s last game).

Dan on September 8th, 2010 at 11:06 am

@Clutch: You act like we’re tailgating in Michigan. Are you sure about that spot next to the Backer? That’d be ideal for obvious reasons.

@Chris Kerr: Well said, congratulations on being the voice of reason around hear, which is something to be proud of (maybe).

@Frommy: Ever since the lebron-athon nothing ESPN does surprises me. F#@^-heads.

@A$%# Lawyer: I appreciate that she’s watching. I figured we had scared her off during last years MSU game.

Eric on September 8th, 2010 at 11:32 am

Does anyone have two extra tickets (preferably not counterfeit) for the game on Saturday? I pay in cash or Subway shirts, or both.

Eric on September 8th, 2010 at 11:33 am

Since it came out today…i got to wondering why you guys arent on the Irish Roundtable list?

trey on September 8th, 2010 at 11:35 am

Sorry guys, but you need to do something about the sound.
The computer sound is very weak and a little scratchy — and makes for a very odd “conversation.”
    Otherwise…love the show!
    Go you-know-who!
    btw

    b.t. wall on September 8th, 2010 at 12:07 pm

The new computer format is like the seat cushion of Weiss’s favorite chair … flat, flat, flat. Have loved the show up until now. Too bad.

atlND on September 8th, 2010 at 1:06 pm

It is what it is, guys. We’ll do our best each week to work out the bugs…but it’s this or nothing.

It could be a lot worse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TggF4Ebo9s

Sprout on September 8th, 2010 at 1:34 pm

What is the deal with the screen? has there been an explanation that I missed? Is there some sort of restraining order??
Love the show, just wondering whats up? Will you guys ever update your Itunes page? Please??!!

Paddy on September 8th, 2010 at 2:10 pm

I moved to Oregon, hence the screen. Was explained in the first episode, I believe. Although I’ll be in town for the Michigan game so next weeks show will be taped live before a studio audience…or something like that.

iTunes has fallen to the wayside because it was problematic with our past video player. We’ll take a look at it again since we have a new one…but no promises. You should be able to view the episodes on iOS or Android devices though…if that helps at all.

Sprout on September 8th, 2010 at 3:12 pm

Hey guys, any chance of getting your t-shirt in an XL or XXL? My hubby loves your show and I would like to get him a shirt for his birthday but we’re not all as svelte as you two!

Shannon on September 8th, 2010 at 6:27 pm

Great show guys! Glad you are back! Looks like Wenger is out. Too bad. Hopefully Manti and Carlo will kill Denard on Sat. Are you guys coming to LA for the USC game? I’ll be there. Would love to hook up and have a drink with ya’s.
    Go Irish
    John

John Tague on September 8th, 2010 at 6:39 pm

Great show guys. I think Boston College is going to be his signature game. I really think Kelly’s Irishmen start out 4-0. I know i know wishful thinking but I just see us starting out hot and tearing it up against the trees. Sprout, how’s the Northwest treating ya? Again great show and F*ck Michigan!

Derek (Missoula) on September 8th, 2010 at 9:10 pm

agree with USC as a signature win… though if Utah is undefeated when they come to South Bend this game could present a earlier “first signature” win. Don’t you guys have the feeling that BK is going to be signing his name frequently?

    Dan S. on September 8th, 2010 at 9:46 pm

@Dan S, no more than I thought Weis would have been signing his name after his first game.

@Derek, the Northwest is amazing. If I ever end up in Missoula, let’s meet up for a drink or a fish along the Big Blackfoot.

@John, I may be heading down to the USC game but nothing is certain yet.

@Shannon, unfortunately we are all out of XLs. We’ll let you know if we end up getting more though. Sorry about that.

Sprout on September 8th, 2010 at 9:56 pm

Guys, heres an idea regarding the screen issue. I dont knkw if this will entail more work for you or not, but it will help alleviate some of the sound/video quality probs.

Dont try to record with live streaming of Sprout. Instead, just record yourselves completely independent of each other. I think you should still do some kind of video conference so you can react to each other appropriately, just make it invisible to us.

Then, in post-production comes the actual heavy lifting. Sync the two video recordings and do a split screen-type thing where you have clean video and sound from each of you.

It may not be perfect, but no ome asked you to move to f****ing OREGON, Sprout.

…also i highly recommend throwing that crApple in the trash.

trey on September 9th, 2010 at 6:42 am

In theory, good. In practice, expensive and much more time consuming.

If 45 people want to buy ads for the Corporate Teat though to give us enough money to buy a second HD cam, lighting equipment, and mics, we’ll gladly give it a spin.

Sprout on September 9th, 2010 at 7:21 am

loving the show all the way in iraq…..game is not being shown this week since too many ranked teams are playing in the same time slot so i’ll be watching updates on my computer all night….glad there’s still a show even though there’s a computer screen it’s better than nothing by far…i’m feeling a close one this week but IRISH win….god i hate michigan….

JJ on September 9th, 2010 at 10:23 am

@JJ: Thanks for the support, it’s obviously not the ideal situation with the computer screen but we agree that it’s better than nothing. Hopefully you’ll be coming back State side soon enough so you’re able to enjoy all the IRISH games no problem. Stay safe, and thanks for finding time to watch all the way from Iraq. Cheers.

Eric on September 9th, 2010 at 12:07 pm

@Sprout: You make it over to Missoula we’ll take you out and show you a good time.

Derek (Missoula) on September 9th, 2010 at 9:16 pm

Everyone, here’s a picture of our RV: http://yfrog.com/14lh6ij It doesn’t have wolves howling, or cougars prowling on it, but that’s the best we could do. We’ll be in White Fields for the better part of the morning till around 1:00. Free tshirts for all.
