Episode 12

He IS Bob Davie

Sprout and Eric had a long debate if they should even post a show this week. If the Irish don’t show up to play, should they have to?

I once had a recruit ask me who the statue on the dome was…I told him it was Knute Rockne

Catlin on November 25th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

It was WAY more than a handful of students. I was in the student section and I saw snowballs flying toward the field often and from all over. It was embarrassing as hell.

Dave on November 26th, 2008 at 7:55 am

In 14 years of working in the Press Box I have never seen a player come out after his final game, and sit on the 50 crying. Pat Kuntz whom has not showed up at all this season, and has played with no emotion was on the 50 crying after he and the rest of the defense could not man up and stop the Orangemen.
I am a true fan and it breaks my heart to say this, but the Irish no longer play with any heart or emotion. I believe this is a true reflection of Chuckles nonchalant attitude.
Unfortunately, this team still has alot of problems. Turkovich and Young should be embarassed, because I could go to St. Mary’s and find ladies that could block better then those two do. Jimmy has digressed from the start of the season, where he could check off to an open reciever. Our running backs recieve the blow and fall down, rather then delivering a blow and running the defense over. The defense really could do without 2 Coordinators, because we still can’t man up and stop the run.
Snowballs?! We are talking about Snowballs?! Stop your whining, and play like men not cheerleaders! Then maybe, the children in the stands will stop throwing snowballs, and respect you like the true men they expect you to be!
    Go Irish!

Fat Man must go. The stumble bum of a coach is killing ND football.

Tridentum on November 26th, 2008 at 8:34 am

I want to be on the show!!!

Dr Grow on November 26th, 2008 at 8:43 am

When the Coach shows no emotion during a game how the hell do you expect the players to react..The play calling is the same for every game. what in the hell do they do at practice. I have seen the o-line stand around and let a defensive lineman go right by all the o-linemen do is stick an arm out and watch the QB get hit. N D wants the MONEY.. But I wouldn’t blame the team if they turn any bowl game down ..It’s a reward to play in a bowl game..IMHO the Irish are undeserving to go to any bowl. The dictionary meaning of NASTY is ” BAD TO DEAL WITH”…among other meanings.

Pretty sure we lost laptopgate. Michigan State. The Magic Brew must really be working!lol

The Subway Domer on November 26th, 2008 at 9:57 am

@The Subway Domer, touché. We’ll have to fire our fact checker.

@Dr Grow, do you have any hidden talents and/or are you really Dr. Lou? Because then we will definitely have you on the show.

Sprout on November 26th, 2008 at 10:16 am

Everyone is missing the real problem. Development of players. Yes, fatman is a great recruit, and yes, we many times have better pure athletes on the field then lesser schools. The problem is from when they leave high school and when they step on a college field. NO DEVELOPMENT. That’s fatman’s fault, and probably won’t change. Is Kamara a better receiver this year than last? point proven.

Gallagher on November 26th, 2008 at 10:36 am

Charlie MUST stay, for at least 1 more year: 1) The Willingham hole is only 3/4 full. Love or hate CW he does have a knack at bringing in quality recruits even in hard times. 2) No Coach will take a 3/4 full cup that will no doubt lose future recruits. This future class may not be #1, but it is a GREAT compliment to last year. The only hole is D-line, but the 5 start HI LB could help a lot. I don’t know anything about the snowballs. 1 or 1000, it was too many. The HI kid was in house & saw with his own eyes. Either way the nation press has taken this and ran wild saying a student player rift is growing. Not good!!!! 3) The talent on this team IS very young; the upper class “leaders” are not on the field (see 3/4 full comments.) true leadership needs 1 more year. 4) He is cultivating talent. Just look at who is scoring all the TD’s this year. We have seen only 1/2 last years #1 class. I like what I see so far!!

Now I am not blind, changes DO need to occur: A new line coach immediately!!! Find a Joe Moore type. #1 on my list, Hudson Houck, o-line coach Dallas Cowboys. He is a high priced mercenary that could bring immediate results. Next, I strongly feel CW needs another offensive coach to challenge his offensive “guruness.” CW is still very good, but I see TX Tech, Cal & Missouri running wild offensively, why not us?? Gotta get me some of that!! Creative juices grow when new ideas flow.

    Hope some of you agree,
    Go Irish!!!

I still maintain let me have the pick of the players who are ranked below 100 in the high picks
of high school and who want to play hard nose football and my team will whip the top 100 game after game. Just look at the last Nat championship ND team they were short on tallent but LONF on desire and work ethic
    GO Irish

joe fogerty on November 26th, 2008 at 10:49 am

I will take players who are not in the top 100 but want to play and whip the top 100 every day jof the week what do you think the difference between number 54 and 101 Desire and work ethic
Nat Champs 88 they were not gold chip players out of high school but the did want to play

joe fogerty on November 26th, 2008 at 10:52 am

Another fantastic installment of what has come to be my favorite show. Does Eric wear that jacket to the games? Where can I get some of those balloons for my daughter’s birthday party?

hondo on November 26th, 2008 at 11:28 am

You’re a sick man, hondo. Haha.

Sprout on November 26th, 2008 at 11:33 am

one major distinction between faust and weis – people actually like faust.

i would also like to point out, there is no way you can adequately prepare yourself for the tailgate this weekend.

rohn on November 26th, 2008 at 11:52 am

CW is flatout being outcoached…. How many double digit leads do we need to see to figure out that other coaches can make adjustments on the fly while charlie sucks his water bottle. CW reminds of the old Lions coach, Wayne Fontes. At the end of games both had snot running down their nose and a dazed and confused look on their face.
Glad their are other tough and nasty teams out there on Staurdays that I enjoy watching.

    Go Irish!

Cal Lauria on November 26th, 2008 at 11:56 am

But did they like Faust at the time?

Weis is still a good guy. He does a lot with charities and what have you. He’s just proven that he couldn’t coach a YMCA team, let alone a college team.

Sprout on November 26th, 2008 at 11:57 am

    Charlie don’t coach!

Kilgore on November 26th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

“Loyal” Subway Alumni, while certainly welcome and to be encouraged, are few in number (rise of good regional teams; parity) and have become, for the most part, irrelevant.

    nd'71 on November 26th, 2008 at 12:21 pm

@rohn: So saying that I’ve been preparing for this tailgate my whole life won’t work?

Eric on November 26th, 2008 at 12:25 pm

Eric, I think nd’71 just called you irrelevant.

Sprout on November 26th, 2008 at 12:37 pm

Charlie is an incompetent lummox. I don’t care if he’s arrogant. Arrogance is great. However, an arrogant head coach would step on the throat of inferior teams, not pussyfoot with leads because he’s afraid of running up the score.

Brian Boru on November 26th, 2008 at 1:05 pm

Thanks guys. You’ve given us something fun to do in an otherwise dismal season. As for Charlie..ya know, he’s honestly a really nice guy. But, I honestly don’t give a !@#$. We knew this would happen, didn’t we? When they announced him..you wondered. That first year you thought “ok, maybe I was wrong about this guy.” Year 2 you were downright hopefull, that is until LSU pantsed us in front of the entire nation. Year 3,well, what did you tell yourself? “Uh, well, with these new recruits…just wait till next year.” Well here we are! Charlie’s guys, Charlie’s coaches, Charlie’s play calling for God’s sake! And now you know. Look guys,we get better kids than Utah, and tell me, what kind of year is Utah having? Another year of Charlie? Please! Oh, Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I’m sorry about the rant.

whitey on November 26th, 2008 at 1:40 pm

Yeah I think he did too, that one kind of hurts. Although, unlike some “true” (and future) Alumni, I didn’t throw one snowball on Saturday. Who’s loyal now?

Eric on November 26th, 2008 at 1:54 pm

@whitey: Thanks for watching, we were kind of hoping we’d give you something to watch during a great season rather than a mediocre one. Ah well, Happy Thanksgiving.

Eric on November 26th, 2008 at 1:56 pm

I’m glad to have started the tradition of sending you two schwag. Beer > cupcakes, I understand. Have a happy Thanksgiving and safe travel. Looking forward to the next show, as ever.

Last week was the lowest point I recall in 25 years of watching Irish football. I needed 6 shots just to sleep last Saturday. Gents, enjoy Cali, and hopefully the Irish Nation will enjoy a major highlight in Irish football history by breaking the Trojans!

JohninSchuylkill on November 26th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Sprout: “I think it’s going to be the worst game we’ll ever see in our lifetime.”

    Eric: “We’re going this week.”

    Awesome.

Hey guys….my brother posted your video greeting from the Syracuse game on youtube.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxKjOY22Wi8
Thanks!!! It was awesome!! Wish I could have been there. FYI, we’re going to up there for the ND vs. UConn BBall game on Saturday, Jan. 24th (I think that’s the date.) Feel like tailgating?

Ok…now to the meat and potatoes….

A buddy of mine has been camping out in the Irish Eyes chat room ever since the USC loss. He called me 3 times today…all within 10mins. I guess there are two different people in the room who have posted some interesting stuff and both of their stories are very similar. I guess they have ties to the University….so even though this all will sound AWESOME….it’s just rumors at this point.

First up, I guess there was a big fight on the flight back from the BC game. I guess there is a lot of fighting among coaches and players all stemming back from the Jones transfer last year.

Then, supposedly Charlie was unofficially fired after the Syracuse game, with instructions to continue with recruiting. Also, Mike Haywood has supposedly already cleaned out his office a game or two ago and hasn’t been at the games at all.

Also, Charlie let his son call several plays this season, which wasn’t looked at very well with the players or other coaches. (Sprout…you may have been right all along on this one!!!)

They’re apparently talking to Urban Meyer and Bill Kelly. Kelly was in the hunt for the Tenn. position and told them “No Thanks” when he heard ND knocking on his door. ND (along with assistance from the DeBartolo family…development company with ties in S. Bend and who owns the SF 49′ers) is recruiting Meyer hard and apparently he’s willing to see what they have to offer. They say he’s waiting to proceed any further until after the SEC championship next weekend.

If this is all true, it will be huge off season news. I’m not exactly keen on Kelly…but apparently he’s a hard ass and a great motivator. Upon taking the Cincinnati position, he was asked how long it would take him to turn the program around. His answer…”10 minutes.”

Also, can you imagine if Meyer took the job?!! F me would ESPN be screwed….they would have to talk about ND allllll off season. Poor bastards.

Clutch on November 30th, 2008 at 5:33 pm

Since the Lou Holtz era, Notre Dame has lost 64 regular season games. Thirty-one of them at home. I would bet no other so-called top division one football team has lost as many. No one is afraid of coming to South Bend to play the Irish. I don’t know why, but we definitely don’t have a home field advantage as do some other teams. Also, when we get the next coach, please let it be someone who is familiar with the college game. Forget these NFL coaches. We need a good college coach.

Joe Caro on November 30th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

…or a crappy NFL coach. (Lou Holtz, Pete Carroll, Nick Sabin(?))

Clutch on November 30th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

2 words for ya BILL COWHER!!!

Ian on December 1st, 2008 at 3:26 pm

There is no way in hell Meyer is coming to South Bend. He has free reign in Florida, and doesn’t need or want the recruiting restrictions that come with ND Football. This decision should be based on if a coaching change happens, will this years recruiting class and next years stay. I can’t deal with another 3 year rebuilding process without guys like Crist, Floyd, etc. That Cincy coach, or maybe the guy at GT are interesting options.

Gallagher on December 1st, 2008 at 3:45 pm

    Gallagher-

You should read up on what Meyer REALLY wants before you pipe off. Have you read his biography yet? Here’s a couple of recent Florida news articles about what he really wants and him leaving U of F.

It’s about to be official. Charlie will be back next year. Jon Latina, Ron Powlus and the rest of the offensive assistants need to go ASAP! Especially Jon Latina, who’s highly recruited line produced the worst running game I’ve ever seen. Even though its not Charlie’s, I need to see some heads roll. If Corwin takes the EMICH job, good for him, he will have deserved it. Im happy with Jon Tenuta running the defense. Fix the lack of motivation, fix the running game and someone please smack that post game interview smirk off Jimmy’s face!! Does anyone else see him smirking during the press conferences after getting his head kicked in?? Let’s hope pure talent takes over for bad coaching next year.
