I Bet It’s So Upsetting to be Willingham’s Son. Home

Hope everyone enjoyed the bye weekend. The Loyal Sons of the Subway Alumni took the time to review the first half of the season, finalized their plans to head out west to see Tyrone, and created the beginnings of what will become their very own Subway Alumni Club.

UW is the only team in a BCS conference yet to win a game. they are awful, but i have a bad feeling about the game

Hey Fellas…where’s Leahy on the Coaches’ Poll?

Irish Joe on October 21st, 2008 at 10:57 pm

@Irish Joe, someone brought this up to us before too, unfortunately, there just wasn’t enough room.

Leahy was right up there with Holtz and Parseghian, but we were afraid that including him in the mix wouldn’t leave much disparity at the top. Not all of our Polls necessarily rank things from “really bad” to “really good”, but when we do, it is nice to have a range of coaches to associate things with.

By the way, PBR won its Blue Ribbon at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. As current Chicagoans, you should know that because everyone in the city has read “Devil in the White City.” I’m just saying…

    Another great episode.

NDgravy on October 22nd, 2008 at 6:13 am

@NDGravy - I don’t think that’s completely correct, but it’s a common mistake. Pabst started selling their bottles with blue ribbons tied around them as part of a long-term marketing campaign to show that they were an award-winning beer in general. In fact, the blue ribbons were even on the bottle shortly before the 1893 fair. They would still have blue ribbons even if PBR wasn’t proven to be the greatest beer in 1893.

Good show guys; sorry I’m going to miss you this weekend.

Joe the Plummer on October 22nd, 2008 at 6:55 am

I’m gonna have to go with Joe on this one…not that I know the correct answer, I just happen to know that he has been a member of the PBRmy for years. I bet they sent him a history pamphlet or something.

Sprout on October 22nd, 2008 at 6:57 am

If we join the Subway Alumni Club will we receive ID cards that say “Charter Member”? That would be kinda sweet.

NCIrish on October 22nd, 2008 at 7:33 am

don’t worry sprout, my brother missed his run this weekend too. it happens.

you guys should enjoy a mad dog or two during your show. i’m pretty sure mogen david, the proprietor of the md 20/20 label, is irish.

john on October 22nd, 2008 at 7:40 am

The history that is behind PBR fascinates me. Thanks Joe, we’ll definitely miss you this weekend.

@NCIrish: We’ll have to figure something out for members, I’m thinking tattoos.

…you really have to separate the cornerbacks from the safeties…the cornerbacks are very suspect…considering that Lambert hasn’t broken up a pass in 3-1/2 years..and he’s not the only one!…

I’ve become addicted to your show. Only problem is that I think you need a NY’er on your show, since that is where the REAL subway alumni come from!! Seriously, call me. I’m free anytime….

Paddy on October 22nd, 2008 at 1:04 pm

Doh, widget didn’t work. Here is a way to get the Subway Alumni to come do a show in your town. Well, we can all hope. http://www.eventful.com/subwayalumni

Daniel on October 22nd, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Daniel, San Diego is a beautiful place… particularly in February, when Chicago isn’t so much of a beautiful place. We’ll be out in L.A. for the USC game, but build up enough of a following for us out there and we’ll make our way out west again. Stay classy San Diego.

Sprout on October 22nd, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Sun Diego is always nice! I think there needs to be a live show, from the devils lair in LA. The Subway alumni force is strong here in So-Cal, plus we can add value to the club with our supper hot women.

Little hard on Weiss huh? Just remember that he had takin over a very poorly recuiting team from TYBONE and didn’t have much to work with. Weiss still has a few of Ty’s recruits on the team now. Look at the differnce in the level of talent Wiess has brought in. Hell ALL the freshman are better then 90% of anyone of Tybone’s teams.

i know Charlie makes some bonehead calls sometimes though, but what do you do when your kicker cant kick a 30yd field goal? Or your punter(last year) cant kick it 30 yrds?

We will be fine and before you know it, Weiss will be sittin right under Holtz on your message board.

UDub is the probably one of the only stadiums where people tailgate from their boats on Lake Washington. The stadium is a horseshoe like OSU…with the open end spilling out onto the lake.

opps, just relized i spelled Weis with two ss’s… dont worry boys, i didn’t go to ND either!!

Ian on October 22nd, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Hey guys I think you’re site is great. I’ll be up at the game and you are more than welcome at our tailgater. I’ve never been up there for a game, but if we’re not too gone by then I think i should be able to recognize you if you’re wandering through the parking lot near the stadium. We’ll have a giant bottle of Pendleton Whiskey (from my hometown of Pendleton, Oregon). Hope you guys have a great time on the west coast.

have fun in seattle!! i love that city

Catlin on October 22nd, 2008 at 7:44 pm

You allow O’leary, Davie, Faust, and Willingham on the board, but no Frank Leahy?

Ben on October 22nd, 2008 at 8:14 pm

@Ben, see my post up at the top here…we mention why Leahy was left off.

@NDcivil03, tailgating and whiskey are two of our favorite things. We might be floating all over the place but we will do our best to stop by. If you see us wandering aimlessly, tackle Eric, that will get our attention.

I have been viewing your show the last couple of weeks. You guys are great… we love subway alum b/c they are more passionate than some of the actual alum…. It’s awesome. I noticed that you were wearing my son’s # this week on your jersey. He is a walk-on who made the team last spring and was one of the qbs with Jimmy in the Blue/Gold game. He played a decent amount and even completed a pass. He also played special teams. They moved him to a DB and special teams a week before the season, and changed his # from 12 to 17. He’s loving life…this has been a dream come true for him. It’s what he’s been waiting for since he could walk at 9 months old.
There’s another walk-on qb with #17 on the team now, so don’t get him confused… Nick Lezynski is my son… the smallest kid on the team, but the one with the biggest heart for Notre Dame. We have a long legacy at ND. My grandfather played under Rockne. My bro was on the ‘77 team, my husband and I met there, my daughter was on the Pom Squad for three years and grad. last year… She lives in Chicago! the list goes on and on… Keep up the good work.. Go Irish

Jacqueline lezynski on October 23rd, 2008 at 12:22 am

@Jacqueline, #17 is a strong number, (it’s been my jersey number for years in multiple sports) and now I’m glad I have another story and person to share it with. Hopefully he gets into a game sometime soon (on special teams or because Jimmy has already thrown for 600 yards or something.)

Either way, he’s won our respect.

    Thanks for watching.

Sprout on October 23rd, 2008 at 9:18 am

@Jacqueline, does your brother have any stories from the ‘77 team? What a great time to be on the Irish. The ‘77 USC-ND Green Jersey Game is one of my favorites to watch over and over again. He probably even knew Dave Huffman, #56, the center for that year’s team that we talk about on the show. We credit him and his red elbow pads with the invention of the fist-pump.

We’ll be rooting for your son the rest of the year. Hopefully we get to see him on the field soon.

Hey guys, what’s the name of the band that plays the Victory March in your intro? Thanks

    Irish73 on October 24th, 2008 at 9:01 am

    David Ruffer - #32

Remember the name. The newly added kicker. Watch out Walker!!!
