You have got to buck up, man. You cannot drag this negative energy into the tournament.

    A$%# Lawyer on October 13th, 2009 at 9:08 pm

Indeed a bit of negativity in this episode although it is not all that unfounded considering the past 31 hours…. In my opinion the defense has to had totally reinvented themselves during the bye week. The first thing out of my mouth after the first defensive series should be who are these guys!? The offensive line has been a big improvement this year overall – they must bring their A game. Like Eric I believe the special teams will be key for the Irish this Saturday. Definitely need LLLLLOOOONNNNGGGGGG kick off’s and smothering coverage. Ultimately gimmicky play calling, green jerseys (please Lord no) and green outs dont win games. Faith in one another – a shared committment to play tough as a team and a desire and determination to embrace the moment and get some pay back along with a big time vibe in the stands will deliver the victory in this game. Holtz always attributed the “spirit” of Notre Dame as the main reason for monumentous wins. This is the spirit that needs to be rekindled once more. I hope Charlie had enough sense to replay the lowlights of the last 8 games in this series for these Irish. IF that isnt motivation enough for this ND team – nothing will be. This game is truly a turning point for ND football – another loss to our rival is simply not an option this year. GO IRISH!

It’s the calm before the storm, gentleman. Can’t have the sweet with out a little of the sour.

Chico Kyle, the football coach of our high school alma mater, would get up and give the final speech at the pep rally before every game. The gymnasium would be rocking prior to that but it didn’t matter if we were playing our biggest rival or Sr. Mary’s School for the Blind, he would deliver a speech that made it sound like there is an overwhelming chance we might lose the game.

It kept the team humble. It kept the team motivated. It won us 10 state championships.

See you guys there. Mannix and I will be tailgating just down from Pole 13 at the Pittsburgh Paints tailgate. We’ll swing by once we get settled in.

Saturday can’t get here fast enough. Looking forward to the weekend fellas.

Kmart on October 14th, 2009 at 8:17 am

@Kmart: How are you getting there? Are you taking the train?

@Clutch: Pittsburgh Paints tailgate? That sounds sweet.

Eric on October 14th, 2009 at 8:57 am

One we do have going into this game, unlike the last 3 contests is a solid offensive line. I’m not worried about them in short yardage situations anymore. They WILL establish the run.

One thing I did realize about Tate in Wildcat is that he played baseball, which means he is more of a threat then Allen back there because he might be able to throw a good ball. I think the Irish are very predictable in this set, but he has only thrown once.

    Great show,

    RB

I know Chico Kyle. And Charlie Weis is no Chico Kyle. Who should have been considered for this job at some point.

    A$%# Lawyer on October 14th, 2009 at 9:26 am

To the Notre Dame football team, both players and coaches alike: I have barely been able to sleep for the last week waiting for this clash. I beleive in the Fighting Irish. I beleive in Coach Weis. I beleive in Jim Clausen. I beleive in this team. This year the Irish have shown poise when it matters most, and that counts for so much more than people realize. I hope the Notre Dame players read this post, becuase if any of you are reading this right now, just know that I will be screaming my head off for you watching the game this Saturday. I KNOW that you can win. Just focus, be determined, and FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!! GO IRISH!

    ND83shark on October 14th, 2009 at 9:55 am

I’m with you Rob, we’re pretty predictable with Allen in the wildcat. I thought Tate was really productive back there with an added dimension. However I think this is Jimmy’s game. It’s his time to prove himself, and gimmicky plays aren’t going to cut it against Pete Carroll’s D. Establishing a running game is going to be key for Jimmy’s success, they must keep the defense honest early on in this game.

Eric on October 14th, 2009 at 9:57 am

Sprout, I tried that Theraflu once and I was on queer street for like 3 days. Go easy. I agree with you and another poster above on the green jersey usage. It is just a gimmick and that along with gimmicky play-calling won’t win the game for you. Defense wins championships and I hope our D has spent 2 weeks remembering how to tackle and practicing fundamental football. I think CW is solid for the year and that Swarbrick will evaluate after the season. I believe a good performance by Clausen here would vault him to the forefront of the Heisman discussion. Remember: Huskies beat Trojans and We beat the Huskies, so a win this weekend is within our grasp. GO IRISH beat SC!!!!!

Guys I got another movie reference for you, Rudy of course. In the beginning when his family is sitting in front of the TV and Rudy announces that he someday will play football for the Irish, they are watching the Notre Dame-USC game. Noticed that when I was working out. I look forward to your show every week guys keep up the good work. I’ll be at the Uconn game maybe I’ll run into you there. GO IRISH!

Kurt on October 15th, 2009 at 8:15 am

    Good episode guys.
    One comment though.
I believe the fact that the series has been lopsided as of late hasn’t diminished this rivalry at all. For a lot of ND fans especially it has fanned the flames of hatred even more, making it an even bigger rivalry. As any intelligent ND fan knew when we had the run of 12-0-1 against Southern Cal, it couldn’t last forever. I’m sure the few intelligent USC fans out there are aware of that fact too. Let’s hope for you and me this small streak of losses ends now so that order can be restored.
    Go Irish!

IrishRover on October 15th, 2009 at 1:29 pm

I had the flu for the Sparty game. Sux, I know. I was drinking Theraflu all weekend. EEEEEEEEEEEEW

trey on October 15th, 2009 at 6:25 pm

We’re not going to make it to the game, but we’ll be watching here in Iowa. We’re looking forward to an Irish win, and crushing a lot of good beer whilst.

    GO IRISH!

I want this one so bad that it actually hurts….Can you believe that? Im a grown man. I never even attended Notre Dame. These are 18 year old kids, who could give a rats azz if I care or not. Yet tonight, I will not rest. My mind will not quiet down. Its there. Like a hammer and nail banging in my head….”Will the Defense step up?”, “will Charlie coach the game of his life?”, ‘Can Jimbo step up to the Heisman podium”…the questions are endless. The what ifs can go onto infinity. I’ve been barely able to function this week. All I’ve been thinking is about ND/USC….I need to make the voices stop…..Notre Dame, please, please win this one for me……

ONCE: the number of consecutive wins (in Spanish) of the longest winning streak in the series.

ND du Lac on October 16th, 2009 at 4:03 pm

@ND du Lac: Beers on me whenever we cross paths. I wish I couldve pulled that of on the show.

Eric on October 16th, 2009 at 4:19 pm

Glad to see you guys drinking Victory Beer. An old buddy, and huge Irish fan, is their assistant brewmaster in Downingtown, PA (a western suburb of Philly). We here love Victory, try their Hop Wollop or Prima Pils, but thanks for giving them their due. Go Irish!!! I’m part of the Mobile Dome crew (shortbus with the Virgin Mary on top). We have been banished from the JACC lot, but come by the bus lot, just south of the JACC and there is always plenty of Victory beer and Evil Burgers for all to enjoy. GO IRISH!
