Breakdown, indeed. Certainly not the weekend anyone was hoping for. But the Loyal Sons refuse to believe the season is over. Time to rebound and Hate State.

Go Irish! I can’t stand Michigan! But you have to admit the QB for Michigan is for real. Great Kid. He will be tough to face for the next 3 years.
Now let’s put that loss behind us and play like the Irish can play and get moving toward a BCS Bowl!
Beat Sparty!

I refuse to discuss this game. So I’m going to bitch about a pet peeve.
“You’re comparing apples and oranges.”
They’re both fruits.
They’re both round.
They’re both brightly colored.
They’re both delicious.
They’re both nutritious.
They both grow on trees.
They both go well with alcohol (cider, mimosas, etc.)
In summary, if you can’t compare apples and oranges, then what the hell can you compare?
Another great show with great insights that I haven’t really heard elsewhere. I like your point about CW not trusting Hughes to run on that last series yet he will throw to an unproven freshman. The logic is inconsistent. Breakdown was a great title for this installment because that’s what every part of our game was, except for the offense. It is truly a shame that some stellar offensive performances were overshadowed by the outcome of the game. Lastly, I agree that CW has to accept the lion’s share of the blame for this loss. For an offensive genius who purportedly gives us a “decided schematic advantage” he is awfully predictable when he shouldn’t be and awfully unpredictable when he should be calling standard plays like running the ball at the end to chew up clock. I’m afraid that this week’s game is shaping up to be the game of his career. A loss here, at home, to a team that just lost to Central Michigan would be worse than losing to Syracuse last year and will undoubtedly provoke the alumni to start calling for his replacement. There is a lot riding on this game for him and we’ll see if the players get revved up enough to play for his job security. I also agree with your observations about our 3rd Q performance and it looks like there is absolutely no adjustment on either side of the ball being made at halftime and players aren’t being properly motivated for the last 30 mins of the game. Makes you wonder what they are doing during halftime. Lastly, as an aside, I’m just wondering why you guys can say that something pisses you off but other words like Bitch are always bleeped. Are there some standards on the Internet? Are you censoring your own show or does someone do that for you? Just curious. Keep up the good work boys…..it is always a pleasure to watch.

Great show guys. Thanks for not jumping on “the blame the refs” bandwagon.
Weis has no one to blame but himself with his game management, and Tenuta not looking to a previous encounter with Rich Rod when he was at GT. His vaunted attacking D gave up 38pts to WVU. Defending the spread is like defending the option…you can’t blitz 24/7 and go cover 1.
No one deserves to win when you give up 300yards on the ground. We take minor out of the game and we aren’t talking about referee calls, and we wouldn’t talking about Weis because the Irish may not have been in that situation if we stop the run. At the same time it still wouldn’t change the fact that C Du(m)b makes some questionable playcalls, and he would eventually get that weakness exposed later in the season.
we need to DOMINATE MSU!! DOMINATE!!
rob on September 16th, 2009 at 9:31 am
did we give up 300 on the ground?? I don’t know…….
Either way…..it sure seemed like it.

@JerseryShoreNDFan – the bleeps are actually a quiet homage to Arrested Development, the greatest television show of all time. Plus, swear words are funnier when you bleep them out.
And agreed, this weekend’s game is definitely a defining moment for CW’s career. Probably even more so in that he’s promised he’d never lose to them. Bet he wishes he could take that one back.
@rob, we gave up 190 compared to our own 154. Someone made a comment on NDNation about how in the past few years, we’ve lost every game in which our opponent out rushes us, or something like that. I don’t have the time to find it or check that fact, so hopefully I’m quoting it correctly.
Regardless, we need to stop the run, you’re right.
I had to go to a wedding two out of the past three years instead of going to the Notre Dame – Mich St game!
I still hold it against them!
J Doroh on September 16th, 2009 at 9:42 am
Actually, I read that as an away team, we bring Big East officials into an opponents stadium, except with Michigan. Apparently Michigan has some kind of agreement with Notre Dame to only use Big 10 officials at their home games.
For example, you would think we would have Big East officials this weekend at home against MSU. But actually, MSU is bringing Big 10 officials into our house.
Now, on a side note, I think we still have a Big East official that works up the booth for video calls. At least I’ve seen that when we play USC in the past.
Correct me of I’m wrong.

Well that was therapeutic.
For the record I was passed out in bed by 7:30p on Saturday, with my last memory pulling the Captain out of the freezer/rolling around on the floor with Keegan.
Can a Unicorn hand-deliver something if they only have hooves?
Don’t balme the refs? Good God did everyone not watch the game? There were some serious issues with the refs in this game…period. Sure, Weis, Tate, Clausen, blah, balh, blah can be blamed (esp. Weis) but come on – the refs took POINTS OFF THE BOARD! Check this out – it may make you sick! http://www.ndnation.com/boards/showpost.php?b=football;pid=189108;d=this
I like the one where the ball is almost in Clausen’s hands, the play clock shows 1 second and yet ND received a delay of game – Darn you Weis!
Be real guys – we still should of won but we were robbed!
Danirish on September 16th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Oh the issue I have with the sshhh call against ALlen is that where was the call against the Mich qb on is (terrific) 31 yard TD? Where was the call on Tate when he finally caught a TD?
But when ND takes the lead and does well putting Mich in a deep hole, suddenly the refs are concerned about sportsmanship?
Danirish on September 16th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
@Danirish, trust me, we hear you loud and clear and we certainly agree that the calls were terrible. But what can be done about it? There’ve been enough posts and threads on all the message boards and blogs that it is getting out of hand.
Weis sent in a tape to the officials, as he does (and all coaches do) after every game. The proper justification will have to come out of that, not out of every Irish fan bitching about it. (I’m not singling you out here, either…so please don’t take it that way.)
Trust me, we spent all the rest of the weekend complaining amongst ourselves…but with this episode, we wanted to break down some of the things that we thought the team themselves can do to improve their chances of winning, regardless of what the officiating is doing (or not doing).
You DOMERS are some sorry lossers. Face it freshman QB showed your sacred (#1 pick) jimmy clausen up!! Sorry saps complain about the refs. I thought ND Fans were better than that. Take your aggrestions out on state & beat them at home if you can? GO BLUE!!!!
Jay on September 16th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
As a life long ND fan, I have come to realize that we will NEVER win another national title. We could have the best coach, best players, best assistants, and one game a year we will lose do to the officials making bad calls. The sooner we realize this, the quicker we can sit back and not worry about each game. It’s all about getting to a national title game. Who as an ND fan, really gets excited over 8 wins? How about 10? We want to win them all, and anything short of this is failure. 1 loss or 4. Failure. More reason to just join a damn conference. Might help.
Designinme on September 16th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
@designinme — using that logic, Notre Dame has only had 11 successful seasons then. It’s a wonder we have any fans at all. You can’t really mean this, right?
Sprout on September 16th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
I voted on the web poll 21 times. AND I want my app st. jersey back.
Uncle Steve on September 16th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
@Uncle Steve – ha, you’re lucky Eric and I will both be out of town. I’m sure you can expect plenty of phone calls from us both.
You can collect your jersey when you come on the show and talk with us about the beat down we’re about to give to MSU.
Jay can’t be a real person, right? He’s someone making fun of Michigan fans, I’m convinced. No one is that dumb.

Sprout, nobody said you have to go to the wedding. In fact I seem to recall someone requesting an invite for said event. I am touched that you are giving up a home Notre Dame game for the big day. I don’t think the game starts until after the ceremony, but I approve of your use of the App during the reception. Hopefully you will be celebrating a win with some Maker’s Mark at the open bar. See you Saturday
Pat Mc on September 16th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
C’mon, Pat. You think I’d really pass up the opportunity to see Booze Bob at an open bar? Not to mention Kmac and the peanut butter jelly dance? Oh, and to see you get married.
I too passed out at about 7. My brother’s a Skunkbear fan, and this week we’re going to the Chiefs Raiders game(I’m a Chiefs fan, he’s a Raiders fan)with dad. Wish me and the Chiefs some luck! GO IRISH!
Jakerbluegold on September 16th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Gracious! The o-line doesnt make the top 5 gooders from this week? Come on show the love! Last year and before no one could even wait a second to kick them in the nuts. Credit belongs where credit is due and the offensive performance starts with the o-line.
@Sprout – Obviously I let the emotions from Saturday still get the better of me. Yes, I feel we can still have a successful season. Obviously we have not been in the title talk for 20 years. Beating MSU and USC in the same year would be a start towards that goal. I do feel true success is the title. I live in Ohio.. and whenever the fuckeyes lose, fans say ” The Big 10 Championship is what means the most to us”. Total b.s. Everyone wants the title.. and second place is remembered about as much as 10th. A one loss season would be success for us after years of mediocracy, but that shouldn’t change our mind of what true success is measured by in College Football. A playoff season, and fair officiating would make this entire week much easier to deal with.
designinme on September 16th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
First show I watched. It was decent. I thought some thoughts were a bit off. Everyone dumps on the QB draw but if you watch the play, the play was there. Graham just made a play. As for the last plays, he played to win and Allen was out. Hughes couldn’t threaten the edge and Jonas was in the doghouse. Your logic is right. If you trusted a freshmen on a route, you should have handed it off. My other thought was that maybe they could have lined up Tate in the backfield and let the exHB run.
Kicking… first kick ever for a kid. Give him a break. He gets a pass in my book. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again.
For the most part, I was happy with the playing from Weis. More offense in the big house than like any other Irish team in recent history. If Weis is in charge of scoring points, I am fine with his performance. I know it was still a loss but offensively they were pretty good.
Erick on September 16th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
@NCDomer: You bring up a great point, everyone always jumps on them when we can’t move the ball and now that Clausen has time they lose all the credit. Never having played football I’m going to go out on the limb here say that as O-Linemen they expect that. They’re digging the trenches every play and want to keep it that way. I watched excerpts from the Captains press conference the other day and Olsen in true linemen fashion, took credit for a lot of the penalties on offense and than deferred all credit to Jimmy and his receivers for the offensive outbursts. But I see your point and it’s a good one. All the credit will in time go to the O-Line if they continue to put up the offensive numbers.
@Erick: Glad you found the show, hope you comeback. I agree with you that the play was there on the QB sneak but what I don’t understand is why move completely away from our bread and butter? especially against a weak, undersized secondary. I understand that if he scores easily a lot of people are marching to a different tune, but I still would question the call. Jimmy isn’t a running QB. Period. He will never be known for his blazing speed. That play call at that stage of the game doesn’t make much sense to me, that’s why I thought it was ridiculous. We had only barely begun to test their secondary, which we proved throughout the game was no match for our receivers, no reason to not continue to do so.
My brothers, I absolutely love your show, it’s definitely real and one definitely domers world wide relate too. I think you guys nailed on the head, we just don’t come out at halftime with any sort of urgency or killer instant. We need to play all 4 qtrs. .. I mean hell, if you need to bring in Lou at the half then do it, his speeches inspire, obviously Charlie isn’t getting it done. Heck, call Rudy or something, have him throw on a ‘uni’ in front of the guys, I bet even today he’d make a go of it ;) Keep doing what you are doing lads, you have got the stuff!
thehollisterman on September 17th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Eric and Sprout – Great show! Terrific insight that for the most part rehashed a lot of the elements of the game me and the boys in Erie Pa talked about after the game. It is good to know there are like minded fans out there! What is most disheartening is the reoccurring themes that seem to be playing out w/ the Irish – a lot of which you guys touched on – special teams, time management and I think it was Olsen who commented that once more ND was not prepared for the speed of the game. These are all elements that get traced back directly to coaching. It’s one thing if they learn and move on but it is beginning to show a lack of clear direction, focus and discipline. Great show however – I look forward to the post every week! GO IRISH!
House of Rockne on September 17th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Eric what’s up? You look blitzed brah? but you should what a wretched way to lose a game to the hated ones. You guys called it CW screwed up the end of the game by not running the clock out. Game control overall sucks…the reffing is understood to be biased so what the bleep is CW doing? Defensively I don’t understand why we couldn’t blitz one or two guys while playing man coverage otherwise. It’s great to apply pressure but our guys man for man beat their guys all day long. I think over all the Irish looked great in a loss that should’t have happened. The only player you left out on the board was Kyle who had a great game and he is just as dominate as Tate and Floyd. Ps. I got so pissed after the game that on Sunday I thought Ohio State had won the game. My first thoughts were ‘maybe we lost but so did SC!’ Living in SoCAl SUCKS!!!!
christian on September 17th, 2009 at 7:49 pm
Another great show guys. I agree with everything you said regarding the defense. You have to have guys back there to stop the run. Start Teo! The third quarter needs to be ironed out. They need to score every time the offense has the ball. Period. Beat the Spartans! Go Irish!
John Tague on September 18th, 2009 at 9:02 am
@the hollisterman: I would love to see what sort of halftime speeches are given. I watched a video of Tebow’s halftime speech of the NC game on ESPN’s Page 2. I can’t stand him but I’m pretty sure I would’ve played my heart out for him for those next 30 minutes.
@House of Rockne: Glad to see Erie PA represented! We got a family cottage outside of Edinboro, love that area. And you’re right it was Olsen who said that, I don’t know how I feel about those comments, how can they not get focused for such a huge rivalry game with giant expectations?
@christian: Yeah I was hurting a little bit to say the least. SC pulling it out over OSU was painful to watch but I’m okay with it because it’ll all be worth it on October 17.
