Everyone Just Relax

“Do not speak unless you can improve the silence” -Ghandi (For real, we know a guy who’s sister-in-law’s great uncle was his neighbor.) But seriously…does anyone have the patience to just wait this out without spreading rumors and adding to the media nonsense? Chill out.

A bowl game is still in the balance for the Irish, but in case anyone still wants to register for a chance to win tickets, we thought it’d be worth linking to this one last time.

I wonder if my wife would let me skip her family Christmas on my birthday to go to Detroit and see the Irish play in the coveted Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl…?

Joel on December 2nd, 2009 at 6:24 am

By the way, I agree with the ‘chill’ mentality. I have been trying to tell that to people for weeks. I know it can be frustrating and you might want to jump the gun when we’re losing to Navy and UCONN…but please, enjoy the season, it is too short as is. Your whining and discussion on Charlie’s job status and who could do a better job is just distracting from the excitement of watching this team play and the exquisite entertainment that we get from Golden Tate. Those things are now, and they are fleeting. Whatever is going to happen with Charlie will not be changed by us. But we will regret remembering this year for the year that Charlie was booted, rather than the magical year and fantastic plays that Golden Tate and Michael Floyd and Manti Teo and Jimmy Clausen gave us. (Not a magical year for the team, but still some plays and moments that will be remembered for a long time.)

Very soon, things will start to materialize for the future. And we’ll sit here in the mire of the offseason, wondering where 2009 went.

Thanks again for you show, guys.

    Go Irish!

Joel on December 2nd, 2009 at 6:31 am

Actually, whether Notre Dame is good or bad is inconsequential to if we are in fact relevant by the mere definition of the word “relevant”.

keith on December 2nd, 2009 at 12:25 pm

Name one team over the past 15 years with a record and accolades similar to ours in that stretch that is relevant to the college football landscape.

We are relevant to the media because we have a nationwide base and the story sells.

Sprout on December 2nd, 2009 at 12:46 pm

I just read we picked up a commitment from Louis Nix in the midst of all this turmoil. Does that say anything? I think we have a big name coming in. You know my choice already and I’ll still be ready for A@#$Lawyer’s apology when Meyer is announced.

JerseyShoreNDFan on December 2nd, 2009 at 1:21 pm

I’m worried about you guys–no Magic Hat? Are you ill, doing penance during the coach hunt? Chins up, Heads back, and beer down the pie hole. This too shall pass.

AlakanDomer on December 2nd, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Fellas I agree! All this talk about rumors and speculation are making my head spin. Hopefully the decision will come down in the next couple of weeks. As for now, I hope we all get to see this offense play one last game together because they are exciting to watch…..Please, Please Jack get it right this time!

Several times now, the U has been trying to cram a Square Peg into a Round Hole. I think it’s the U that needs to “chill”.
Charlie wasn’t as bad as he has been made out to be (except for 2007). He obviously cannot play in the players’ stead. He has recruited some major talent that is just missing ’something’ he hasn’t been able to provide. The Team lost 6 games by only 30ish points with no blow-outs. Not bad when after seeing the kind of talent the supposed “weak” schedule actually fielded.
I second the motions from some Talking TV Heads that the U seek out an ‘interim coach’ until they find the Round Peg. Ianello may be OK, my understanding is that he’s done a dang good job of recruiting. Lou or Tony Dungy might consider 1 year for ND or Indiana.
Just NO more precipitous contract extensions. It’s really grating that Ty is the highest paid college football coach in America.

DesertDog on December 2nd, 2009 at 7:23 pm

I hope we go to a bowl game, but lets not play a good team. Maybe the seventh place from the MAC. Then we can enjoy the game and we can pretend we’re on target for 2010.

Have you ever noticed how many people comment about misspelling of names on some of the boards. The world must have too many English majors. We need spell check.

I have to believe that ND was looking for a coach since the end of the 2008 season. They must have had some inkling that Charlie was in over his head and that he may need to be replaced. I have faith that the next hire will be a home run. If he isn’t, at least he’ll be a future rich person.

Ron on December 2nd, 2009 at 7:41 pm

I think that interim coaches every year may be a good idea. Look how much fun it would be if Lou made as much sense on the field as he does in the booth.

It amazes me that of all the people involved in football that there are so few that can lead ND. The same names come up search after search. Stoops, Meyer were relative unknowns when they got the jobs at OK and FL. Find out who’s competent and knows football and maybe we can come up with a list of at least 100 to choose from. Same with the NFL. They pass around the same stale coaches, like they are family and will only choose family. Wherever Charlie goes, I hope he weaves the same magic that he wove at ND.

Ron on December 2nd, 2009 at 8:02 pm

well Ron, i agree with you. they need to find a coach who can just flat out coach. and i do think there is someone out there who fits the bill. Edsall from UCONN is someone who i believe could put the irish back where they belong. i love the style of football he plays. power football but with the ability to throw the ball. don’t be surprised when the smoke clears if he is the next coach. i’m not saying this as fact. i am saying he is someone who should be taken seriously when vetting these coaches.

tom on December 2nd, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Yes. Let’s leave the airing of the grievances for Festivus. I got a lot a problems with you people! For now, silence is Golden.

Our shared sick addiction will be back soon enough.

    Good season. Thanks.

Andrew Wilson on December 2nd, 2009 at 9:31 pm

USC went thru alot coaches before Carroll, Bama’ ditto Saban, Michigan still lookin’ for Bo caliber. Shame ND wasted all those 1st – 2nd round draft choices. Good luck Jack trying to find a COLLEGE coach who will not struggle against Tulsa & Western Michigan. Happy that Navy finally beat ND. They stand for what’s good in college football. I don’t think ND can lose to West Point @ the Stadium next year. Can they?

    Pat O' on December 3rd, 2009 at 9:36 am

I wonder if the right coaching selection could get Tate and Clausen to return for another season? If not, good luck to Tate not so much to Clausen.

Grassy on December 3rd, 2009 at 10:08 am

@Andrew Wilson, A Festivus for the rest of us! Dammit, I wish I thought of that for the show. Well done, I’ll see if I can find a solid metal pipe for next weeks show.

Eric on December 3rd, 2009 at 12:46 pm

Be sure to not decorate it. I find tinsel distracting.

    A$%# Lawyer on December 3rd, 2009 at 1:25 pm

Stop making fun of Western Michigan. A**hole.

Uncle Steve on December 3rd, 2009 at 6:39 pm

We supposedly lost chris martin, but get louis nix to de-commit from miami, this right after CW’s ousting. Like they say, “No Where But Notre Dame!” Huge pickup. Haters on other ND boards are saying we’ll loose many more commits. I thought ND was irrelevant? Why are they on our boards? Our next coach will work on chris martin. Can’t believe he chose ND mainly for CW. Bryant Young needs to step it up & get ahold of this stud. Is tenuta retained? Corwin Brown? I’d rather we keep CB.

Finnster on December 3rd, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Uncle Steve, in the event we go to the GMAC bowl, wanna go with Val? Mobile, Alabama. Beautiful this time of year.

Sprout on December 3rd, 2009 at 7:42 pm

We are ND. We fire a coach because we can get a better one. We think… We hope… We pray… Blind faith, what all Catholics are taught from birth has once again continued the train wreck that is ND football. Dear ND brains, next time please have a solid verbal commit before you fire a guy with a decent offense that you still will have on payroll for 6 more years. Duh!!!! Notre Dame Football games on TV are like watching Entertainment Tonight. We are only relevant in the sense we provide humor and fodder for ridicule. So sad!!!

Johnny Adama on December 3rd, 2009 at 8:57 pm

I gotta work. Val says “ABSOLUTELY, WE CAN STAY AT MY PARENTS” To be continued……………..

Uncle Steve on December 3rd, 2009 at 10:05 pm

Oh Yea Let’s get re le vant, re le vant. One gets relevant by winning football games. There are millions of people who are nice, can get all our fotball players to graduate, believe in goodness and mercy, can communicate, but can’t win games. I for one am tired of ND stressing the graduation championship every year.

There are plenty of good coaches out there who can be successful at ND. If they’re competent, pick any one of them. A football coach usually steps up when he goes from one school to another. It allows him to look at a higher level of player. If he’s a winner before, he’ll be a winner again. At ND he can recruit the best players and his chances of winning will be the same as previous coaching assignments. I know it doesn’t always work that way, but not all great coaches or future great coaches are named Saban, Stoops or Meyer.

I actually love the fall and one of those reasons is watching Notre Dame football on Saturdays. However, I care more about the way they play than winning. The winning comes with playing well. Gentlemen, either we take Brian Kelly or he’s going to Michigan when Rodrigues gets fired. I live 5 miles from Michigan State. Tell me they aren’t sorry they passed on Kelly because he didn’t have the experience they thought a coach needed. MAKE A PICK. The recruiting and the retention of recruits depends on it. Let’s not kill 2010 or make it Ir re le vant.

ron on December 6th, 2009 at 6:16 am

    Hey Guys,
I’m probably going to catch shit for this but I’m gonna say it anyway. I was on the bandwagon for getting rid of Weis for about a week but I think I’ve fallen off now. If we don’t get a name by the end of the day or at least by tomorrow I think we’ve made a mistake. The longer Swarbrick holds out the more things are going to slip thru his fingers. He should have had a name on contract before Weis was let go. Everyone is pissed especially Stoops, Meyer, and Kelly. The crap that those guys have had to put up with the last couple of days is amazing. Who could blame them for telling ND to piss off and leave them alone? The current players and their parents are freaking out. People are going to start jumping ship soon. It’s going to Demetrius Jones all over again but on a grander scale. Where did Jones end up again? Oh yeah… The recruits are being hounded by every program in the country especially Tennessee. Charlie Weis isn’t even the coach anymore but he’s still calling every single recruit and telling them to stay with ND. What does that say about Charlie? It says that he is all ND. I would rather have someone who would bleed out for ND then a bunch a guys who don’t really seem that interested. Charlie gave us a solid offensive scheme and brought in great recruits. His biggest weakness was his faith in that jackass rat fink Tenuta. I was all for “chilling out” for a couple of days. But I’m done “chilling”. Especially after I heard today the Crist might be leaving. If he goes we are doomed. Get a name quick Jack. I think Edsall should be seriously considered. Thanks again Sprout and Eric for providing a place to sound off. I love this show and can’t wait for the next one.

John Tague on December 7th, 2009 at 10:24 am

John – Where’d you hear that about Crist?

We’ll address a lot of what you bring up in your comment on the show.

Sprout on December 7th, 2009 at 10:39 am

Yahoo reporting both Clausen and Tate entering the draft.

Hoss on December 7th, 2009 at 1:08 pm

    Sprout,
I heard the Crist rumor from my father who read it in some blog. He doesn’t remember which one. Sorry if it misleading. I don’t want to spread rumors. Looking forward to the show

we are going to have a coach by weeks end…i like charlie i like how much he loved ND i loved what he could do with a QB….the D was never there but it was CHARLIE who decided who ran the D…I hated reading from seniors that they knew what to expect from charlie win or lose on tuesday practice…when you lose to that school north of ND or Navy you should not know what’s coming on tuesday you need someone to motivate and get a team ready not a ho hum attitude…i appreciate charlie’s continued support but HE was the head coach not john or corwin…i believe Dayne will be our QB next year and with floyd and rudolph plus our 3-4 strong RB’s (havent evan seen c wood yet) plus shaq and goodman i’m not worried about the O bring in a good solid firery head coach and get a strong D man and lets get it goin…i’m gonna miss jimmy and golden but jimmy played for charlie NOT ND….I WANT ND MEN like Mr. NIX…next year will be good…GO IRISH

blessed every day i’m not a UM fan….NOTRE DAME OUR MOTHER

(sorry if that was a rant that didn’t make sense my kid is running around knocking everythink off my desk)

JJ on December 7th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

I think ND owes Lou Holtz big time for the way he was treated when they booted him out, I mean when he resigned. Hire Skip Holtz and make Lou the team motivator. Maybe ND can make amends and throw off the curse that surrounds the football program since that time.

Can anyone really say Bob Davies, Ty Willingham and Charlie Weis without a snicker. These coaching hires could only have been done because of a curse being placed on ND football. The devil made me hire them. I think that we could have taken a pick out of a hat and come up with better coaches.

ron on December 7th, 2009 at 7:49 pm

    John,

You should have your dad read the article about how rumors are started:

    http://bluegraysky.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html#7014119063071457519

How easy is it for any of us to start a rumor in the age of anonymous internet posting/blogging? Pretty damn easy. We just need some patience and, before we know it, we will all have our answers. ND will have a coach and Irish football will live on!

On a side note, please stay Crist please!
