Episode 63

The Big Pineapple

Finally stepping up like the Loyal Sons have wanted all season, Te’o is leading the charge of a revived smash-mouth defense. After 11 quarters without giving up a touchdown, it seems that Diaco finally has his boys playing as a team. Can they keep the dominance going against the Trojans? They’ll need to if Tommy Boy is going to have any chance at keeping it a close game.

Fair warning, once Adam and Eric start talking about USC an f-bomb or two may slip through. It’s hard to contain all that excitement for the Trojans.

Our apologies to the young ears.

I haven’t even watched the episode yet but I want to like it. Can I “like” Sprout’s comment? Gents, if I can find you on Saturday, I’ll have two Stone Arrogant Bastards for ya. GO IRISH!! Beat trojsbgdurjjhrjfjfj!! -Joe

DomerQ on November 23rd, 2010 at 9:42 pm

Haha. Thanks, Joe. Sadly we won’t be down in Southern Cal for the game. Enjoy the Bastards for us though.

State Rep DeGeeter on November 23rd, 2010 at 9:54 pm

Promise us the keys to the city, and then we’ll talk, Tim.

In all seriousness though, Eric and Adam will be passing through Ohio, though I am not sure their schedule. Next time I am in Parma though I will definitely be taking you up on a Schlitz or two at the Tavern. Have a good Thanksgiving.

Hey guys, first year viewer, first time commenter. I’m an ‘09 grad and I now stay up late on Tuesday night before work to catch these things before I go to bed. Phenomenal job guys, and you got yourself a huge new fan.

Anyway wanted to touch on two things real quick. First, regarding the stadium experience, where you seemed to be wondering how good it was. While this opinion is slightly skewed by being a Long Island-born and raised Yanks fan, that game was a ton of fun. It felt like an ND home game in NYC (band, Tim McCarthy etc.) and the ND crowd was very into it. The build up to the game was great too, as the whole city seemed to be covered with Domers. Some of the bartenders said the atmosphere was similar to a Yankee playoff game, which shocked me. Honestly the worst part was the lack of enthusiasm from the cadets in the stands, who were pretty much in sad panda mode all night. It made me actually more impressed with the Middies in retrospect.

The other thing is the play card you guys were talking about. Now I wasn’t watching the telecast, but I have a friend and alum who was at the game who made that EXACT play card. His name is Dan and it was just a fantastic job by him. He even had three others! Now if you are sure this play card was on the sideline, completely disregard what I just said.

Keep up the awesome work guys, and sorry for the long comment.

    -James

P.S. Don’t know if you saw the coverage map for this week, but who the hell thinks the Northeast wants to see Oklahoma vs. Okie State? DID YOU JUST SEE THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO FIT INTO TIMES SQUARE AND YANKEE STADIUM THIS WEEKEND? Ok, I’m done. ‘Night.

    James D on November 23rd, 2010 at 11:08 pm

Right on, Jim. Thanks for the insights into the stadium experience. Doesn’t change the fact for us Tribe fans that the Yankees Suck, but it’s good knowing a positive game day experience was had by so many faithful alumni and subways.

Sprout on November 23rd, 2010 at 11:14 pm

I agree I like the Irish in this one too. But it think it may be lower scoring and ugly.

Jimmy Grant on November 24th, 2010 at 7:28 am

It’s been a long eight years of southern cal arrogance. Kick these guys while they’re down!

Loved the golf cart smack. It’s obvious someone on the Irish staff has a great sense of humor. Keep lobbying for the Subway Alumni logo to make it on the play card.

Fuck the cheating trojans and the white horse they rode in on!

Irish Rick on November 24th, 2010 at 9:46 am

Tim I’m not going to be in Parma this thanksgiving unfortunately…just driving through Cleveland on to our family cottage in PA. It’s been almost a year since I’ve been back though so I’ll get something in the works as soon as I can and will definitely be down for a Parma Tavern run.

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Eric on November 24th, 2010 at 10:35 am

I think we are looking good going into this one fellas. Looks like it might be a wet game out here in LA. They are saying it’s going to rain a little so that should be interesting. Is anyone going to be at the IrishFest tailgate party before the game? Let me know. Would love to have a beer with ya. We have to stop SC’s running game. That is where it has to start. Whoever is in at QB for SC needs to be creamated into a doughy paste by the hands of Te’o, Calabrese, and the rest of the crew. Hopefully Rees will shake off the nerves early and make smart plays again like he did against Army. Turnovers cannot happen. Would like to see Toma in the endzone. Look for big things from Eifertand hopefully Kamara. I think Floyd will have a tough time though. He will be matched up pretty well but once they get rolling SC should quit pretty early like the quitters they are. I’m excited to be going. Go Irish! Fuck U$C!

Irish In LA on November 24th, 2010 at 11:33 am

Great show guys. Still flying high from that win in Yankee stadium. I was really feeling like a big let down was coming on Saturday afternoon. It just seemed like when things are always too good to be true with Notre Dame in recent years, it usually has been and we get let down. But it was awesome to finally step up to all the hype that surrounded that game and the moment and to walk away with our heads held high was something this program needed.

Big ups to fellow Pittsburgh native Darrin Walls on his pick 6 … Since Nd hasn’t had a defensive td since 08, that was nice to see.

Here is to hoping Manti stays all 4 years, the kid is a beast out there breaking his nose for the team and is top 10 in the country in tackles as a sophomore … We are truly watching something special with #5.

Kelly doesn’t need this win now that we are bowl eligible, but it would be the icing on the cake to what I would say was a good transition year for his program. Although, breaking an 8 year losing streak to USC would be great for this team and for the Seniors especially and would be the statement victory of the year in my opinion.

Watch out for Cierre Wood to have a big game this week. Being from Cali, choosing Nd over USC, and along with the confidence he’s been building since becoming the starting tailback … I think he is primed to have a huge game.
Go Irish, beat Trojans, F*ck Michigan, and Happy Thanksgiving to all of ND nation.

Dale on November 24th, 2010 at 11:59 am

I didn’t know you were related to Dane Cook…

DomerHead on November 24th, 2010 at 1:20 pm

Right on, Dale. We didn’t talk about Cierre being a Cali kid and the Irish not having a 100 yard back this season, but we should have. It’d be a tall order to get it done against SC, but it sure would be great to see it happen. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for it.

Thanks for letting me fill in, brothers. Sprout, we’ll miss you this weekend. There’s an unlimited supply of juice out here, so you know what that means: this party is gonna be off the hook.

    A$@! Lawyer on November 24th, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Great show but missed Sprout (no offense to the A$@! Lawyer but don’t give up your day job). I happened to go to the Army game and the atmosphere was electric. I went to the pep rally at Lincoln Center on Friday evening and was able to meet Don Criqui, BK, Rudolph and Justin Tuck. Ian Williams was also there but not as accessible. Afterward, we headed over to the Sheraton and visited the ND bookstore and picked up a few trinkets and I happened to ask the cashier if he knew about any tickets for sale. Well, he pulls a business card out of his wallet and says call this guy he may have some. As it turns out, the guy had 2 great seats for sale at face value and we sat right next to him and his buddy. They ended up buying us beers and we returned the favor and that went back and forth a few times and a great evening was had by all. We did take the #4 subway all the way to the Stadium from lower Manhattan, so I am now an official Subway Alumnus. From the Special Ops guys parachuting into the stadium to the last play, it was a great experience and so glad we went. I hope they can keep the energy flowing til Saturday night and put a hurtin’ on these cheaters from L.A. GO IRISH, BEAT SC and oh yeah, MUCK FICHIGAN.

JerseyShoreNDFan on November 24th, 2010 at 3:46 pm

I want this win just as bad as anyone else but I just dont know….WE did great against Army but lets face it Army sucked…Its like this, if our defense can hold them and our offense plays their best game ……THEIR BEST GAME….then we can win this…I want this win more than any other!!!!!
    GO IRISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    BUCK USCHEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wes on November 24th, 2010 at 8:55 pm

Has anyone noticed that Tommy Rees looks a lot like Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) from the American Pie movies? Just sayin. I wouldn’t say the season will be a success if they beat usc, but its not a failure either. Progress is being made. The weis hangover is worse than I origonally thought. 8-5 after whatever bowl game this year would really feel as if ther’re headed in the right direction. Go Irish! Beat Trojans! F the whole state of Michigan! Thanks for the youtube tip. That clip is great.

kyndfan on November 24th, 2010 at 9:06 pm

I heard that there’s a chance that ND would play in the Champs Sports Bowl…apparently they have the option to take a 6-6 or 7-5 ND team once every 3 or 4yrs. Anyway..the rumor was that the other team Champs picks is from the ACC…which was looking like the U. Now that would be a match-up that would spark some talk on the message boards.

However, Miami might have played themselves out of that last weekend with the loss to Virginia Tech.

Clutch on November 24th, 2010 at 9:51 pm

I think ND has to be 7-5 to grab a spot in Champs Sports Bowl.

Jimmy Grant on November 24th, 2010 at 11:15 pm

This season of 2010 could have great. A field goal here, a tackle there, one or two fewer interceptions and three or more games could have easily been won. 10-2 or 9-3 were ours for the taking. However. in 2011, let’s have fewer injuries and better execution. Maybe our offensive line can watch films of other teams to see how holes are opened up when blocking takes place. Go ND Beat USC. Let’s strive to be winners instead of whiners.

    Ronnie K on November 26th, 2010 at 4:56 am

Here’s to you and here’s to me, I pray that friends we’ll always be, But if by chance we disagree, TO HELL WITH YOU AND USC… GO IRISH!

DomerQ on November 27th, 2010 at 9:30 am

Low scoring and ugly just like I predicted! 7-5! We will take it!

Jimmy Grant on November 27th, 2010 at 9:29 pm

no ohio state fans please, they’re the worst

billy on November 28th, 2010 at 12:00 am

Walking out of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum last saturday night to the silence and shock of the Trojan nation was pure joy! Go Irish!

SoCal Irish on November 29th, 2010 at 10:37 am

These games sometimes change the series. ND lost one in like ‘99 10-0 when they had to start a back-up qb. They didn’t win too many more after that. Things average out…and karma too. Over time I think bounces even out. This takes away some of the sting from the Michigan State game. That guy dropping the TD at the end atones in my mind for the fake fg.

Jimmy Grant on November 29th, 2010 at 10:42 am

@SoCal Irish- I was there too and the look on their faces was priceless. Most satisfaction I’ve had in long time. My throat still hurts from screaming and celebrating. It was a great win. Hughes is now a legend.

The LA Coliseum is a dump. Totally falling apart. Rivers of rainwater all over the place. Terrible announcer talks through the whole game plugging crappy local businesses. Trojan band knows three songs “Fight On”, “Seven Nation Army” and some crappy Dr. Dre song. They suck. Very annoying synth blasts over the loadspeakers to get the crowd going. Super lame. As soon as it started to rain SC fans left in droves. Pathetic.

Defense was a thrill to watch. Harrison Smith was like the Angel Of Death flying in to get that interception.

Again, Robert Hughes is a legend. I couldn’t be happier for him. He had a tough four years.
