“The Case for Frank” Home

Well, that sucked. Losing anything to anyone from Pittsburgh is never fun, and the Loyal Sons are pretty sure that this loss never should have happened. Way to make some inspired play calling, CW.

In addition to some choice words for Charlie, Sprout and Eric discuss their upcoming trip to Boston and shamelessly plug their new shirts.

And, in honor of the election, they’ve decided to have a little vote of their own and need all of your help in deciding if Frank Leahy should be represented on the Coaches Poll.

Keep him off. Why mess with perfection?

Mike on November 5th, 2008 at 11:15 am

    O’Leary has to stay.
    Davie has to stay.
    Willingham has to stay.
    Weis has to stay.
Faust could maybe go, but he loved Notre Dame too much.
The other 5 have actually done something at ND, so they have to stay.
Therefore, I think you have to leave it. The only potential man to replace is Faust.

dogolfer on November 5th, 2008 at 11:58 am

    Frank Leahy on the board?

I’m sorry, the correct answer is who gives a crap.

Seriously, though, Davie needs to be above Willingham. That’s bothered me for months.

Adam on November 5th, 2008 at 12:56 pm

O’Leary is a good coach. You should take him off the list.

    Ty hates ND and sucked.
    Faust loves ND and sucked.
    Davie was mediocre all around.

    Therefore, 9=Ty, 8=Faust, 7=Davie.

    Weis is 6.

Devine won 1 NC and was the least popular of our NC winning coaches. 5.

It gets more subjective at this point, but Lou and Ara had awesome records 2 and 3 NCs respectively and rejuvenated the program. 3&4.

Leahy had the most NCs and a bad-ass record. 2.

    Rock is undisputed number 1.

Broph on November 5th, 2008 at 5:42 pm

FFFFFFFFF Me that game blew. I’ve now been to the two longest games in ND history…and honestly, that f’ing sucks.

The whole game centers around Weis’ ability to get a ~17pt lead and then think he can use the old NFL mentality. Running the ball once you have the lead, hoping to run the clock out.

He needs to get the Steve Spurier mentality and run the score up until the 4th quarter, then run the piss out of the ball.

By the way…missed you guys….I was over by the new track and was hoping to whoop someones ass in a couple shotguns. Oh well, we’ve got next year.

i will boycott if davie is removed. he let me on the team. i’d be upset to see faust leave too. i saw him at the game this weekend and said, ‘hey jerry!’ and he stopped and talked for a bit. got to love him for that. and he’s an ohio boy. that has to count for something.

rohn on November 5th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

Dump Devine because he was mean to Rudy in the movie. Yeah Bustaz

    Irish73 on November 5th, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Keep everyone, especially Bob Davie, the mastermind behind the greatest 2-point conversion play of all time where you play-action one direction and a tight end is wide open on the other side of the field. Also, he’s the only college coach to beat Pete Carroll by more than a touchdown. And he let Rohn on the team.

Add Leahy right behind Rockne, so then you’re coaches poll has 10 instead of 9. Why can’t you do that? I know it would require you to think of one more thing every week, but it could be a real top-10 list then.

JoePa on November 5th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

Having only 9 coaches in our “top ten” list is a very subtle nod of the hat to the counting ability (or inability) of Three Guys in a Basement.

And is that fact about Davie really true?

Sprout on November 5th, 2008 at 9:08 pm

What fact? That he’s the greatest coach of all time? That’s debatable.

But the fact about the only coach to beat Pete Carroll by more than a touchdown is completely true. Compare his biography: http://www.petecarroll.com/index.cfm/pk/content/pid/400465, to this game recap: http://und.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/recaps/102001aab.html. Granted, it was in Carroll’s first season and Davie’s last, but it still counts.

JoePa on November 5th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

that’s ridiculous on so many levels.

Sprout on November 6th, 2008 at 6:59 am

Great show guys! I have made it a religious habit to watch you all on Wednesdays. It makes losses like this past week easier to swallow.

Anywho, I was just curious if you all were heading up to Baltimore in two weeks for the Navy game. If so let’s get together and shotgun beers.

    Rudy87 on November 6th, 2008 at 7:47 am

O’Leary should be taken off. He may have been a good coach but he never really coached ND. He was hired and fired faster than Ty can drink a glass of chocolate milk.

MICKYNDS on November 6th, 2008 at 8:53 am

    Gentle man!

    First, Leahy is prounounced (Lay-he)

Second, get rid of O’Leary. The Joke is done!

Third, this is how your list should go.

    1. Knute
    2. Frank
    3. Ara
    4. Lou
    5. Chuckles
    6. dandy Dan
    7. Gerry
    8. douche bag Davie
    9. Ty the destroyer

    Love the Show boys!

Bob Davie is a Douche Bag on November 6th, 2008 at 9:07 am

I am quite old 83 to be exact .. been watching and listening to the Irish long before TV. Of all the coaches I have seen at ND THE MASTER ..Frank Leahy was by far my favorite, followed closely by Lou and Ara. Leahy came up with so many new angles that the rules committee would change the rules.. Simply because Leahy said… “The reason for the changes by the rules committe was who came up with the plays and or formations and how successful”. So you can see there were always Notre Dame haters way back .

fightenmick on November 6th, 2008 at 10:48 am

Hey guys, big fan of the show… just wanted to let you know that there’s an ND party in Boston tomorrow night at this great Irish bar called Lir on Boylston St. The official ND Club of Boston party starts at 6:30, but people are going to stay all night so definitely come when you get to town. It’s a great bar, it should be really fun. Hope to see you there.

Irish on November 6th, 2008 at 12:40 pm

Right on FightenMick, in addition to having the greatest user name on our site, you are also our oldest viewer. We certainly appreciate it.

@Irish, we’ll do our best to swing by. We’ve got family in town that we will be having dinner with Friday night, so hopefully after that we can slip to the bars.

Sprout on November 6th, 2008 at 12:57 pm

    Of course include Leahy…
He is my dad and I’ll have the Leprechaun attack all those who say no.

Leahy on November 6th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

No joke? Yikes…I’m humbled and slightly embarrassed.

And I’m pretty sure the voting can stop now. Your vote sorta trumps anyone else’s.

    Thanks for watching.

Sprout on November 6th, 2008 at 5:05 pm

I think Leahy should be on the list…any coach who tells a player they’ll burn in hell for screwing up has to be on the list.

You guys ever thought of going around the lot before the game and asking fans why they hate Michigan, or USC, or Boston College? I think there could be some great footage waiting out there.

    Or maybe…
Eric and Sprout - future presidential ticket?

Kevin on November 6th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Kevin’s 2 ideas are genius, just brilliant

Mike on November 6th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Hey, I call my kids lads all the time. It’s a holdover from my years in the Coast Guard. Recruits were called lads. And what the hell are you thinking leaving Leahy off the list?

Mike on November 6th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Leahy, we must be related then. Coach Leahy is in my family tree and my gradfather on my mother’s side is the late Angelo Bertelli.

I got to spend a lot of time with my grandfather before he passed away in 1999. The one cool thing that I see visiting my parents is his Heisman Trophy!

weisgipper on November 7th, 2008 at 8:21 am

    weisgipper…
    I guess we might be.
It would be interesting to see where we are related.
    Anyway…
I’m not surprised dad didn’t make your poll.
He didn’t make the shirt and there are none of his books about him in the bookstore.
Somehow ND has left Frank Leahy out.
    Take Care,
    Fred

Leahy on November 7th, 2008 at 11:54 am

I wouldn’t sweat the shirt too much. Those things have been an embarrassment since the Return to Glory shirt.

And as trivial as our Coaches Poll is, you can bet your dad will now be a part of it.

Sprout on November 7th, 2008 at 12:44 pm

Leahy in place of Devine & T-Willy needs to be further down.

Irish Joe on November 7th, 2008 at 5:02 pm

If I buy a subway alumni shirt, can I have my Applachian State shirt back?

Uncle Steve on November 7th, 2008 at 6:33 pm

if you ever stop playing doctor and come hang out with us again, you’ll get your jersey back.

Sprout on November 7th, 2008 at 9:17 pm

Don’t drop anybody, instead add two to the list. Frank (of course) and Hunk Anderson. Why Hunk Anderson? Cauz that’s a pretty cool name.

    Irish73 on November 8th, 2008 at 9:38 am

Leahy has to be right below Rock…4 National Championships…give it up for The Master.

Kick off O’Leary and move Ty to where he belongs at the bottom.

Golden Dome on November 8th, 2008 at 10:37 am

Love the subtle recognition of the 9 coaches on the Top 10 list. Too bad we are to slow to figure that out on our own.

dave on November 8th, 2008 at 1:26 pm

I see Pete Carroll planning a 100-0 win underneath that beautiful mane…

    http://www.suntimes.com/sports/colleges/1270342,CST-SPT-neil10.article

    Strategic advantage?
    Indeed, sirs

DocScot on November 11th, 2008 at 6:45 am

I like Irish73’s idea….add two to the list ivolving Big Frank and HUNK ANDERSON!!! Get some!
