Worst memory ever. I lost actual friends in law school arguing about this with these moron CU fans.

Not to be stickler here guys, but as a die hard fan I have to point out that your facts are wrong. 1) The National Title was not on the line. They were out of it at that point because of a late season loss to Penn St. A game which the Rocket was knocked out for the second half because of thigh bruise. I think you are confusing it with 1990 contest.

    2) There was a clip. I’m looking for the clip on youtube and can’t find it, but I think it was Greg Davis #26 who clipped Chad Brown #17 in the back.

I was at that game and the Orange Bowl before that. I was a sophomore in high school and Greg Davis in no way clipped that guy. Sports Illustrated had a great article on this and a clip (no pun intended)by clip picture of the foul and it was clearly a shoulder to shoulder hit. BS!

@rob – From one stickler to the next, here’s how I see it. Yes, the 1990 Orange Bowl had a more likely chance of the Irish winning a NC, as it was #1 vs #3. But the Irish won that game and still didn’t get it (due to a loss to the Hurricanes earlier in the year, who went on to win the NC). So to say a NC was on the line for that game on not the 1991 game isn’t exactly true.

In both seasons, the Irish needed a few things to happen in order for them to win a NC. They did their part in 90. And in 91, who’s to say how things could have turned out. The voters obviously saw it fit enough to keep Colorado #1, even though they had to cheat to beat Missouri earlier in the year. Had the Irish won, and a couple other teams lost, a NC (at least a share) could have been ours.

Plus, for Colorado, in both years, the NC was indeed on the line.

We just obviously can’t get into all those details in a 20 second set-up.

@Jeff – I remember that SI. Our older brother had it and we tried to find it for this, but couldn’t. Would love to see it again.

Great stuff as always guys. That call and losing to BC in 93 were some of the toughest moments in my teenage years. The memories have faded a bit, but the pain never goes away. Thankfully my kids are still too young to understand why Daddy vomits when he hears or sees “Bush Push”. But someday, I will have to explain why Daddy drinks so much after an ND loss….Hope you’re having a great summer, can’t wait for kickoff!

    1) Like I said….I couldn’t find the clip on Youtube.
    2) I’m quite aware of the Hurricanes getting the nod over the Irish because of the head to head.
Thanks for the explanation in all seriousness on the clip. All these years I have always thought it was a clip.
    3) I thought I made a point to say that the NC was on the line for colorado in ND vs CU II. Re-reading what I had written it appears that I have forgotten to include that. Total Mind-blow. I know my shit…I don’t forget things like that. The early loss to stanford and the late loss to PSU screwed them.

I always thought you had to get your helmet across his body??

rob on August 6th, 2009 at 7:35 am

Not sure on that. My understanding is that it’s a hit from behind and below the waist. This hit looked like shoulder to shoulder to me. And not exactly what I would call from behind.

    Here’s the youtube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqC_Br3cDJg

I used to lead my team in penalties in college for similar reasons. And I would constantly get technicals for arguing with refs, “If you can hit him in the shoulder with your shoulder, it’s not from behind!” They weren’t having any of it.

Sprout on August 6th, 2009 at 7:52 am

    From NCAA, pg.46:

ARTICLE 1. a. Clipping is a block against an opponent occurring when the force of the initial contact is from behind and at or below the waist (Exception: Against the ball carrier) (Rule 9-1-2-d).
    b. The position of the blocker’s head or feet does not necessarily indicate
    the point of initial contact.

    Rocket was fast.

Eric on August 6th, 2009 at 11:21 am

    agreed

No clip, and thanks for going to the NCAA handbook. Kudos.

He was so freaking good it was just silly. I count at least 5 Buffs, maybe 6, who touch him, and 7 had a chance at him. The best part of that play is the quote right before the kick; “I’m sure Roen will kick out of bounds. He will punt out of bounds. He HAS to.”

The “clip” comes at the 0:42 mark. Clearly hits him in the shoulder with his shoulder, and Buff player immediately then dives, trying to grab Ismael.

    A$%# Lawyer on August 6th, 2009 at 1:55 pm

Once again amazing job on the electronic reproduction of that play. Just as I recall it so many years ago.
It was as heartbreaking now as it was then. Freaking Colorado as national champs what the h—.

That video was a little grainy. I couldn’t see the Mackrel Snappers.

Will you rewind it and play it again please?

Awesome CO LE CO action there. Great to see it at work. I had thought about getting some Coleco figures and figuring out if they could be placed on the hood of the MD, and then just start revving the engine to see where they’d go. Well, it was a thought.
