“They’ll Be Just Fine” Home

A win is a win. Everyone knows this. But damn…that was a close one. Not exactly the blowout the Loyal Sons were hoping for. Thankfully, the Irish have a cupcake team in Syracuse coming up. Oh, and a fan sent in some cupcakes for the guys. Great stuff.

This week, Eric and Sprout take a look at the basketball team as they kick off their season and see how the football team can improve from their achievements.

Glad you liked them! I figured they wouldn’t make it there in order, but at least they tasted good. My co-worker just went to get a cupcake from the kitchen after watching your show.

And now we know why you used a fork to eat them.

Bliss on November 19th, 2008 at 7:32 am

@Bliss: Thanks again for the cupcakes. They were delicious. We will have some words for the mailman when we see him next and let him know that anything sent from you should be handled with extra care.

    Guys:
USC Upstate is the University of South Carolina Upstate. They are located in Spartanburg, SC, where Father Joyce was raised and went to high school. A few years ago, ND played Wofford College in basketball. They also are located in Spartanburg. Not bad for a little town of 45,000.

    Domerdad4 on November 19th, 2008 at 9:35 am

    Guys,

I absolutely love your show. Please don’t ever quit what you are doing. It gives a lot of us something to look forward to even in the midst of a season that is so up and down.

    Jamie_ND_Fan on November 19th, 2008 at 10:46 am

No worries, Jamie. The plan is to keep going until we run out of unique beers to drink on the show. Thankfully basketball season is kicking off so we’ll have plenty to talk about in the off season.

Plus we’ll have some holiday specials and bowl game specials coming up.

    Thanks for watching.

Sprout on November 19th, 2008 at 11:02 am

    Hey guys,

The D is playing well, but would still like to see more pressure (w/out blitzing).

The offensive line will have to play the game of its life to avoid getting embarrassed at USC.

I’m an Ohio boy too, and it will be some kinda Karma when the vest makes Michigan 3-9.

    Take it easy.

    southbendblarney.com on November 19th, 2008 at 11:33 am

Guys, I’d like to buy that Ohio State vest so I can have something worthy of wiping my a$$.

Brian Boru on November 19th, 2008 at 11:43 am

You guys talked more about cupcakes then you did ND football.

    Dan H on November 19th, 2008 at 12:19 pm

What can I say…they were damn good cupcakes. The football game was average.

Sprout on November 19th, 2008 at 1:34 pm

Awesome show fellas, I wish I went to as many games as you do. I actually saw them play Navy in Dublin, Ireland one year with my pops.. it was incredible. Anyway, sorry this message is so long.. you can delete it if its annoying.. but I want to re-link an article, and my response below it, from where you guys are linked (NDNATION.com) because it made me an angry irishman. Speaking of the corporate teet, Im sure Rudy would appear on your show if you gave him one of those cup-cakes.

    THE ARTICLE

My thougts I emailed to the writer:

“Notre Dame is a special place, with a mix of football tradition and academic excellence matched perhaps only by Michigan and USC.”

    FOOTBALL —> B-BALL GRAD %RATES
    Notre Dame 93 91
    Michigan 73 57
    Southern California 57 29

Michigan is unacceptable and USC is just pathetic. There is no match when it comes to academic excellence. I will surrender that ND has shown barely anything in the past decade (plus) to prove they can perform on the football level USC and Michigan can (except for this RR season). But, Michigan will be rebuilding for the next 3-4 years and Weis will embark on his first season with every player on the field being recruited by him (and his staff). ND have shown remarkable improvements from 3-9 and Charlie has the respect of all of his players/recruits for being that confident, arrogant coach. You think Pete Carroll or Urban Meyer go into the home of a recruit and get down on their hands and knees to beg for a signing? No, they come across as confident and cocky guys who are gonna prime the kid for an NFL career. Not everybody is gonna be Knute Rockne or Lou Holtz and even they were strikingly dis similair. Its a different time and I welcome the attitude of Charlie Weis and know that his freshman talent that have infiltrated the depth charts this year and the class following are going to make him look real good. Because isn’t that what its all about? The players? ANYONE COULD WIN WITH THE DEPTH AT USC. As long as Southern California stays gorgeous, with gorgeous women, beaches and nightclubs and keeps those academic standards at an all time low they will always have the pick of the litter. But, there is enough athlete to go around and Big Charles’ appetite for national recruiting is starting to pay off. These next four years will be exciting and the media will have to unwillingly change their tone once the wins hit double digits again. Just take a gander at the recruiting classes. Chuck could put a cardboard cut-out of himself in a brace on the side-line each game, go in the back, raid the buffet for four quarters and still come out with 8-10 wins.

Who cares if he has enemies!

Terelle Pryor will be wishing he went to ND when he cant find a job after he never graduates from OSU.

Ronan on November 19th, 2008 at 1:56 pm

I agree with winning big. Weis has the NFL mentality that you only have to win. You get a lead and slow the game down. We forget that you have to maintain possession on long drives based on runs and short passes and still play some defense. Annihilating one of our natural rivals and plowing the weak teams on the schedule will send a message that we are back and that you don’t waltz into the Notre Dame game anymore. Sadly, we aren’t there. I hope we do get there soon.

On the off chance we get a Gator Bowl invite you guys should road trip to Jacksonville. Drinking beer outside in January in short sleeves is great. I plan on making the trip from the panhandle and we could have a righteous tailgate.

JohnnyIrish on November 19th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Any ties to Father Ed Joyce is welcome. He was a real mans man and a heck of a fine Priest.

We sure need more like him the world now.

I just found your site and am really enjoying it?

Are many of the Sub Fans here going out to LA for the USC-ND Game?

I sure hope we pull it together and run the Ball Down the throat of the Orange on Saturday.

It will give the O-Line and our backs and Jimmy Clausen some much needed confidence heading out to LA.

There are rooms available for the ND-SC week end at the Anahiem Hilton for I think $100.00 a night. They also have bus service for like $25.00 round trip to go to and from the game. It is right accross the street from Disneyland. If you go,be sure to try to make it to the Sunday Commion Mass & Breakfast at the Hotel. The team and the Coaches and Cheeleaders are there.

It is a great place to meet the players and get autographs.

My parents took me and my older brothers from the 1950s forward every other year at there.

I remember meeting John Huarte,Jack Snow,Alan Page,Terry Hanratty,Joe Theisman,Tom Gatewood, Jim Seymour,Rocky Blier,Waly Patulski,Mike McCoy,Eric Patton,Jim O’Malley,Tommy Clements,Mike Townsend,Pete Demerely,Eric Penick ,Dave Casper,Ross and Jim Browner,Vagus Ferguson,Joe Montana,Bob Golic,Steve Buerline,Alan Pinkett,Tony Hunter,Tony Rice, Stan Smagala,Rick Mirer, Lake Dawson,Jerome Bettis, Rodney Culver,Demetrious Dubose Jarious Jackson and one of the biggest Freshman I ever saw and who could not have been nicer to my grade school age kids in Big Red who plays for the Titans now and of course Ara,Dan Devine,Gerry Faust,Lou Holtz and two of the nicest guys ever in Bob Davey and Tyrone Willingham.

I only mention it if you get a chance and live near by or can drive in it is well worth it.

Of course beating USC also helps, but I have been there for the highs 51-0 ND wins in 66 for the National Championship and again in 88 we beat number 2 SC 27-10 on our way to Number 1 to the low of 64 losing 20-17,70 losing 38-28 costing us two National Championships and of course the 74 game then we were ahead 24-6 at half only to lose 55-24.

But all in all under Holtz we kicked their rears in and enjoyed every minute of those games. Now it seems like it is pay back.

But we will win out there and when we do if you are there you will never forget it.

Beat the Orange and then upset USC.

THM on November 19th, 2008 at 3:05 pm

Another hilarious episode. I stumbled on you guys after the Stanford game and have been a big fan since.

    Two things on this week:
    1. On being from Ohio=having respect for the Buckeyes, I’m from Dayton and nothing makes me happier to see them lose and quiet the obnoxious throngs of fans around here. You should of heard the difference pre and then post USC. This is the only game I ever pull for Michigan.

2.) No comment on the extra Navy timeout? I DVR’d the game and haven’t had the chance to go back through, but I could of swore the Middies took 4 in the second half. CBS even had them without any, I mean if they knew they had one left then why spike the football the previous play?

    Keep up the good work.
I’ll be up at the game this weekend for my one game-a-year with my brothers, my dad, some nice cold Lienenkugels, and some returned Syracuse fan alloted tickets.
    GO IRISH!

Frommy on November 19th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Ronan and THM win the award for longest comments ever. Well done men.

@Frommy, you’re right…we totally forgot to mention the extra timeout Navy took. That was total BS.

Sprout on November 19th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Syracuse was actually called the Saltine Warriors back in the day, and then the Orangemen.

Their new AD Daryl Gross made them change to just the Orange so that all the Syracuse Athletic teams can be called that, instead of the Orangemen and Orangewomen.

weisgipper on November 19th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

OK, now I have a dilemma: Against Navy I decided to not where my #3 jersey for the first time in 3 years and instead chose to show off my Subway Alumni shirt. Well, we won the game but Michael Floyd got hurt & I have to believe it was because I didn’t wear my jersey. Now what do I do?

Irish Joe on November 19th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

@Irish Joe, Sounds like you might have gotten a defective shirt. I advise you to buy another one.

But no, seriously, you are in quite the pickle. On one hand, we have a better winning percentage with you wearing our shirt. On the other hand, I’d hate to see more players get injured at our expense.

My gut tells me to wear the shirt again for ‘Cuse and see what happens. Worst case, wear it under your jersey. We’d be ok with that.

Sprout on November 19th, 2008 at 4:36 pm

Thank you Dr. Sprout…I will use your advice

Irish Joe on November 19th, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Went to the Stanford / Usc game this week, Trojans are quick, but Stanford gave them a better game then final score indicated.

The Irish will need some serious luck and Claussen to play MUCH BETTER to stay in the game.

Great half time show by the Stanford band paying tribute to OJ and the fact that Tommy Trojan wears a skirt.

best show yet guys. i love how you seem to get more intoxicated off of the cupcakes than the beers.

this article should do enough to prove to the ND fans that the tressel shirt is a decent thing: http://www.toledofreepress.com/2008/11/13/osu-fans-channel-best-of-tress-through-a-vest/

i’m getting long here, which may hurt my final point, but let’s not paste full articles into the comments any more.

I didn’t read through all your comments, but in case no one pointed it out, Flying Dog started in Denver. Just had to give a shout out to the CO.

rsand on November 19th, 2008 at 8:40 pm

    @weisgipper & the SAS crew:
Before I moved to FL, I interned with the collegiate licensing company. The evil Nike, Inc helped persuade the Cuse into the name change. The year was 2004 and schools had multiple sponsors. Nike went balls deep and propositioned the Cuse with an all exclusive deal for all sports gear and rights and a name change. The deal wa$ amazing and $yracu$e could ea$ily accept the term$ that Nike put on the table. Since then, many other schools have been locked into exclusive rights deals (ie Michigan sucks switched to Adida$ from Nike this year).

JohnnyIrish on November 20th, 2008 at 12:13 am

Ah yes, I remember that because the lacrosse team switched to orange helmets that year I believe and looked extremely goofy. Talk about truly sucking the corporate teat on that one.

Sprout on November 20th, 2008 at 9:49 am

i’ve never tried the whole cupcake & beer thing…but i love cupcakes…and i love beer. seems to make logical sense. thanks for the inspiration sparky.

piper on November 20th, 2008 at 11:04 am

Not to totally rain on your parade, but since USC is an away game for us, ND can’t wear black unless USC chooses to wear their whites like LSU does for home games.

We can wear black at the tailgate though.

JoePa on November 20th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Why you gotta rain on our (and your) parade, JoePa?

Sprout on November 20th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Hey guys. If you go back and look at early in the 2nd half, there was some sort of replay and when the ref came back to annouce the final decision, he said something to the affect of “Navy buzzed in at the same time the booth did, so they will not be charged a timeout.” How the hell the booth can buzz in before the end of the half beats me.

Eat some more smurf cupcakes, that was awesome. I bet your teeth looked like smurf shit.

WAY TO GO ON ND HOOPS!! Bout time we’ve got a team to cheer for. Check out this 2008 ND hoops promo we got off the web…
