You Can’t Spell F*ck Michigan without Da U

“Save *insert interim coach’s name* ass for me” — doesn’t exactly have the same ring to it, does it? Can they keep the momentum of the season? Can they stir up the hatred from the past?

So are yall coming down for the game? Let me know, would love to finally meet yall and get shitfaced. Im sure we can get a makeshift pole 13 somewhere.

trey on December 7th, 2010 at 10:18 pm

Sorry, Trey. I’m gonna be in Spain for the New Year. I’m gonna have a hard enough time trying to find a pole “trece” somewhere.

Sprout on December 7th, 2010 at 10:33 pm

A couple of keys for this game. First, what does Miami have left in the tank at the end here. They have dropped two in a row at the end. Also they are playing for an interim coach. I recall ND playing for Kent Baer in the Insight Bowl. It was a debacle.

I agree with your assessment. I think this game is low scoring. I can say this…if ND turns it over multiple times (USC) they will get beat. Rees needs to protect the ball. Secondly, I think the scenario of a big Irish win is plausible if they jump out early. At that point, Miami has little to play for considering all the turmoil.

    I like the Irish 21-14.

Jimmy Grant on December 8th, 2010 at 8:30 am

Great show as always guys. First off I gotta agree that this was probably one of the only match ups that I was really going to get pumped for. Although, I am a bit worried about it. Not so much that we shouldn’t get the win, but what if we lose … I mean how bad would we look after running off 3 straight in the fashion that we did, and then blow it in the bowl game against a team that has just fired their coach. We’ve gained a lot of momentum on the recruiting trail since the SC game and I think that even nationally with the press, we are gaining respect back. And since this has turned out to be a high profile game, it could knock us back down a bit. These are two programs going in different directions and I don’t think it’s a trap game, but it seems like we got a lot to lose and we don’t take as big of a step forward in building up the program for next year if we don’t come out victorious. If this program is truly on it’s way back to the top, we need to win this game and stop the trend of these “speed bump” games that we’ve lost in recent years. Keep this train rolling Irish!

Not sure if you guys were planning on doing a “season in review show”, giving out grades and all this and that after the season or whatever, but I was curious to as who you guys felt was the offensive and defensive players of the year for Nd this season.
Also, now that the season will officially be over in a couple weeks, does your perception of Kelly change in anyway if he wins or loses against da U. I think the general consensus is that he has Nd back on the right track and once he starts getting his own players in the program, things will only get better, but does the outcome of the bowl game sway your opinion of Kelly one way or the other, win or lose.

Thanks guys, great season of shows and look forward to watching after the bowl game. Have a safe and happy holidays. Go Nd, and F*ck the convicts.

Dale on December 8th, 2010 at 11:30 am

My next door neighbor is a Miami alum. I don’t think I’ll be talking to him for a while. I have to be nice to him because I already approached him about tickets for the game at Soldier field. He is a season ticket holder and said he could probably get me several tickets. For the sake of that I will be gracious in victory in what is a meaningless, but pivotal game/season for the Irish.
Irish roll 31-17. Reese plays mistake free and Hughes goes out in style pounding the ball for over 100 yds.

kyndfan on December 8th, 2010 at 2:07 pm

@kyndfan: I hope your prediction is right about Reese and especially Hughes, I’d love to see us have a 100 yard rusher again. Good points about Rees and Irish needing to protect the ball in El Paso, didn’t bring it up on the show but that is definitely a key to their success. They were fortunate to get past USC with it and most likely won’t happen 2 games in a row.

@Dale: We haven’t thought about doing a “season in review show” but you bring up a good question about ND O and D Players of the Year.

On D I think it’s got to be T’eo, I think he really came into his own this year and easily led the team in tackles. I think he’s the voice of that Defense that really came into it’s own the past month or so. And I’m just really glad that his Mormon Mission at the moment is to play football for the University of Notre Dame.

Offense player of the year is a little bit tougher to come up with … I think with all the injuries and uncertainty on offense I’d have to give it to Rees. He righted a semi-sinking ship at the end of the season and outside of the turnovers against USC he was nearly flawless. Poor coaching cost the win vs. Tulsa, and he went out and won his first 3 starts. Pretty impressive. I think he deserves to be recognized for the way he handled himself at the end of the year, BK definitely owes him for getting him out of the frying pan.

Anyone else have thoughts? Offense/Defensive players of the year for the Irish?

Eric on December 8th, 2010 at 3:39 pm

@Dale – I share your concern about the potential drawbacks in the event of a loss…but nothing ventured, nothing gained. This is a good matchup for us, and I think we come away with a gritty win.

    ND 20
    UM 16

    @marcusdager on December 8th, 2010 at 5:16 pm

Player of the Year Defense: Te’O

Honorable Mention: Darin Walls (I thought he was really consistent the entire year)

Offense: Michael Floyd (Very Consistent, Improved a lot as a blocker)

Honorable Mention: Tommy Rees (I love how he played but he still threw 8 INTS in only 4 games. Also, I’ll agree to disagree on Tulsa. Yeah the call can be questioned but he still threw a lousy pass. As the QB you always have the option to throw it away. Still a fine job overall for Rees.

Jimmy Grant on December 8th, 2010 at 6:58 pm

I’m 37 so I clearly remember the hatred here…..yes I still hate the sugarcanes more than most teams from that era..I want the IRISH to send the convicts to jail, so yeah fuck the Sugarcanes!!!!!

wes on December 8th, 2010 at 8:05 pm

I watched the ND vs. Miami game in the parking lot just outside the stadium in 1988. We rushed the stadium (and field) after we won. It was awesome!!! People were ripping up pieces of the field for souvenirs and smashing their “Catholics vs. Convicts” signs on the field. I also remember working at “The Finish Line” at University Park Mall during this era and we actually sold a “Catholics vs. Convicts” T-Shirt. Wish I would have bought one at the time.

Clutch on December 9th, 2010 at 6:18 am

    On a side note….

Where’s the love for this year’s Men’s Basketball team? 8-0 going into last night’s game against Kentucky? If you didn’t watch the game last night, they actually looked like they could pull off the upset in the first half. But, Brey took them into the locker room and when they emerged…they played as soft as Barney and Friends and couldn’t hit a shot.
(I swear if Michael Jordan would have been coached by Mike Brey in college, we would all be wearing “Three Jordan” apparel from Nike. Actually he probably would have been drafted by the Portland Trailblazers instead of the Bulls and been cut after 5yrs in the NBA.)
He seems to take any player and turn them into a streaky 3 pt. shooter who doesn’t have any clue how to take the ball to the hole like a man.

Clutch on December 9th, 2010 at 6:34 am

Not sure what my brothers think, but while I love how tough ND bball seems to play down the stretch in the Big East, especially the tournament, they’re a long way from competing with a team like UK, even in what’s going to be a down year from Kentucky. Live by the 3 die by the 3 is never going to work without someone down low to bang, especially when you’re on the road shooting in a new gym, and even more so when they’re in the tournament and shooting in football stadiums.

I haven’t gotten to see an entire game yet this season, but they seem to be taking a step in the right direction, but the Big East is too good to have a team that relies so much on the 3. They need to diversify that offense.

    A$%# Lawyer on December 9th, 2010 at 7:01 am

Hey does anyone know where I can find the ND ESPN team specific logo????

Nolan on December 10th, 2010 at 6:03 pm

Guys, I remember going to the Stanford game at ND in 1988 which was the home game immediately preceding the home game with Miami. The campus was electric….nothing to do with Stanford, they sucked at the time….it all was focused on Miami. The Catholic vs. Convicts tee shirts were all over the place and the shirt that I wish I had purchased: Hey Jimmie Yank My Johnson. Those are good memories and I have a good long-term hatred for those effers. When it comes to Miami, its like having Irish Alzheimers….the only thing you remember is the grudges. When is your next show? You doing one every week up to the game? Sprout, what’s wrong with you? Its like you have a speech impediment every time you say the word interesting. Whats up with that? You better have that checked out. And Eric, I just noticed that you kinda sound like that teacher on South Park when you agree with Sprout, you say MMMMkay. What’s on your jacket? Are they like green dominoes or something? Do you wear it when you tailgate? Inquiring fans want to know.

Weak sauce with sprinkles!!! I was amped up for a new SA show!

I would give something very close to my left leg to be able to go to a Notre Dame football game in my lifetime. To see a game at Notre Dame would be special, to see a game without Tom Hammond calling the play-by-play that would be… well lets just say I would die a happy one nutted man.

Adam on December 30th, 2010 at 8:42 pm

Sorry fellas. I’m actually on Spain for the New Year. Sometimes real life interrupts the schedule. But I have found the only sports bar in Sevilla to watch today’s game at. Cheese fries, budweiser, and Notre Dame football in the heart of Spain. So full of win.

Sprout on December 31st, 2010 at 3:14 am

…and some beautiful senoritas to cheer on the boys with???

vegasmark on December 31st, 2010 at 9:03 am

Hey Adam, You should try buying a ticket first before you resort to any self-mutilation.

    I never made the connection.

Adam on January 2nd, 2011 at 11:22 pm

Back to Back Wins over USC and Miami, 2011 sure looks good from here. Lets hope Floyd sticks around, even if he does not it is nice to know that Manti will be back (I am sure he will be MVP next year) can’t wait till 9-3-2011 and kick off time against South Florida. Go Irish!!!!!!!!!!!!

kzoo Ron on January 3rd, 2011 at 10:00 am

Awesome win by the Irish this past weekend. As for Floyd, the new career wr td leader in Nd history, it was nice knowing ya, see you on Sunday’s.

Anyone else think it was a weird decision for Weiss to leave the OC job, in the pros, on a team he’s helped turn around to win the AFC West … all for the same job in the SEC???
    Go ND, F*ck Michigan.

Dale on January 3rd, 2011 at 12:07 pm

Weis is son was already on the staff at Florida as a Student Assistant. He will be a freshmen there next year. Rumor has it Charlie wanted to work with him.

Jimmy Grant on January 3rd, 2011 at 8:47 pm

Yes I thought Weiss going to Florida was really strange, how much of a cut in pay is a college OC job as opposed to staying at KC? If he is going for his kid got to admire that.
Besides he will still be getting that ND coaching payment for a while sure he won’t go broke anytime soon.
Sounds like Harbaugh is NOT going to Michigan, that frankly is a relief. Maybe Rich Rod for another year?

kzoo Ron on January 4th, 2011 at 7:14 am

Now that the Michigan coaching job is open, I’m telling my Michigan friends that Ty Willingham is available. They always liked him and thought he was a great coach. Maybe Ty will go to Michigan State when they have their next opening.

Now I have to hear abour Charlie and his little son Charlie again. I’ve seen those two enough to last a lifetime. I hope the two become the meat for the aligators.

    Ronnie K on January 5th, 2011 at 8:37 pm

Aren’t you guys doing a post-Sun Bowl, post-season wrapup show? In light of the Miami butt-kicking, I was really looking forward to it. Oh well, 2011 looks as positive a season as we’ve seen in a while.

    Jim S on January 6th, 2011 at 7:19 am

@Jim per our Twitter feed (which you can see to the ride of the messages here) we’ll have our season finale next Wednesday. Holiday travel and family took importance this year over the show. Hope you all come back next week to watch the season wrap-up though!

Sprout on January 6th, 2011 at 9:48 am

I buzzed by your site looking for a season wrap up show and nothing! Was glad to see one is in the works however. Would love to hear your take on what’s going on with recruiting especially Lynch. From all accounts from San Antonio, it would be something to have Lynch and Tuitt as bookends on the D line. I agree with RK above as I too have had my fill of CW and CW, Jr. Dude, let the kid make his own way in life, he can do it and you’ll be glad he did. Cut the damn apron strings with Charlie Jr. already. Hannah needs you more.

JerseyShoreNDFan on January 9th, 2011 at 10:52 pm

Now that I’m into Jersey Shore, Snookie is becoming the focus of my life. However, ND and now Brian Kelly are awakening my spirit for the fall. This ND team in 2011 and then in 2012 will be on par with the big boys. You can see from their recruiting that they don’t give up. They know who they want and go after them. I only wish I had that stamina for Snookie, but my dream is to be at the 2011 opener with her waving to Touchdown Jesus.

The time for DOOM and Gloom is over. ND has at last arrived again.

    Ronnie K on January 12th, 2011 at 4:13 am

@Ronnie, I guess I always assumed you were the Ronnie from the Jersey Shore.

And sorry our final show isn’t up today folks. We’ll get to it as soon as possible. Eric has come done with an illness this week making filming impossible.

Sprout on January 12th, 2011 at 7:53 am

    Floyd’s coming back!!!

Dale on January 12th, 2011 at 10:49 am

Floyd’s Place in the Irish Record Books

    Career Receiving Touchdowns – 1st, 28
Career Receiving Yards Per Game – 1st, 84.6
    Career Receptions – 2nd, 171
    Career 100-yard Receiving Games – T-2nd, 13
    Career Receiving Yards – 3rd, 2,539

He could be 1st in all these categories next year potentially after the first game…

Dale on January 12th, 2011 at 11:01 am

We will know early if the Irish have arrived. If the Irish have arrived or are “back” they will be 6-0 heading into the bye week before USC. The toughest game in that mix should be a home tilt with Sparty. If they are 6-0 at that point they could legitimately be and 11-13 win team.

Jimmy Grant on January 12th, 2011 at 10:29 pm

Ishaq Williams is IRISH!!!!! if we land Lynch this defense is gonna be something special Manti’s senior year…..Kelly and Co can recruit with the best of em and i think we are gonna be in for a treat for years to come….GO IRISH!!!!!!

JJ Donnelly on January 14th, 2011 at 6:08 pm

They don’t need to win all their games. You’ll know if they’re great by how they play, win or loose. This Brian Kelly is the real deal. He’s now at the school where he can recruit the best that can get in. The season’s tickets I passed up several years ago, would come in handy now.

Get ready for A GREAT RIDE. I’m living here in Michigan, 5 miles from MI State. Please beat these guys every year from now on. I can’t take this losing to this mediocre MI State team. It’s unreal. And remember: You cat’s spell SCUM without the UM.

    Ronnie K on January 14th, 2011 at 6:59 pm

Sprout – Keep up the good work. Really enjoy the shows and pick some good European Beer for a change. This picnic beer you drink does not cut it.
